I would have to say

1. Stevie Ray Vaughn

2. Santana

3. Jimi Hendrix

4. Peter Frampton and his talking guitar

Ricky Medelock or George Lynch would be two of my favorites. Now that I think about it, I'd like to add Chet Adkins and Jerry Reed would make the short list as well.

How many of you posted after the first post without reading the rest of the thread.. just being curious...

Hendrix

Eddie

Pil Keaggy (his instrumental only stuff, no vocals with alternate tunings is true auditory magic.)

I read the whole thing and felt like Mr. Guitar wasn't mentioned enough.

Impossible to pick just one. Too many different styles. Some I might vote for: Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn. Maybe not technically a great guitarist but few people can make a guitar sound better than BB King.

Theres several that blow my nind and some of them most people have never heard of.

Steve Vai

Joe Satriani

Buckethead aka Brian Carrol

Yngwie Malmsteen

Michael Angelo Batio

Eddie Van Halen and several more than I can't think of right now.

There are zillions of technically proficient guitarists, both famous and obscure.

Proficiency isn't all there is to it, but there is such abundance of finger dexterity there's no way to even sort out who is most dextrous. All the previously mentioned are fine players. There are too many fine players to even begin to list.

Frank Zappa was very good but I can rarely stand to listen to it. Dweezil has fireworks but it gets tiring.

Jimmy Herring can play about anything.

My favorite without a doubt would be Satriani. Back when I played guitar I had numerous guitarists that I liked. Malmsteen, Vai, EVH, Rhodes, Freidman, Becker, Batio, etc...

However, Satch was always my favorite. He has it all.

I'm old enough to have heard some of the greats, but don't think I've heard anyone do it better than Joe Satriani or Steve Vai.

Like others have said, Its hard to pick just one. All depends on everyones preference, but I just discovered Buckethead about a year ago and surprised me to hear him mentioned from someone else...haha. He is awesome! Wierdo....but awesome! haha

Jmmy Herring is a freak. I saw him for the 1st time about 20 years ago at the New Daisy in Memphis. I like the song above but this Morse tune he does is evil. And he was a "student" at this time, OMG................
