When I was a kid in Atlanta, the Penny's at the mall by our house had a gun counter, as of course did Sears. My first pellet gun - a Crosman 760 pumpmaster came from Penny's. I also bought my most formidable weapon there - a Daisy Wrist Rocket. With a pocketful of Pachinko balls, there wasn't a can in a three country area that was safe.

Penny's was also the place where we went for all of our Boy Scout Uniforms, as they had a section devoted to Scouting - both uniforms and most of the old BSA branded gear. I spent a lot of time in those two sections as a kid.

At least 30+ years old.

Dad bought me my 10/22 at K-mart around 1979 in Memphis. About $60 as I recall. At the time Sears still sold guns and ammo. Target also sold ammo & black powder kits. Still have a box 0f 30-30 around here with a Target price tag.

J.C. Penny used to compete with Sears in sporting goods and I they may have had some gun stuff in the mid to late 70's. Before that they were a fiarly big retailer.

It was around 1984 or 85 that Penny's stopped handling ammo I think. My wife worked for one of the stores in NC. She could get a 10% discount on ammo or anything else in the store. I got a bunch of dove loads every season from them cheaper than I could load them myself. I have a box of 20 gr shells from Sears. Many stores had their own label shells. They were made my one of the big companies like Federal or Winchester etc. I have shot many a round of Western Auto "Revelation" 22LR ammo as a kid in the 60's and 70's. I could get them for around 50 cents a box. But to come up with the 50 cents I had to work half a day hoeing in the tobacco patch in the blazing sun or hauling hay or mowing yards ( with a push mower) for what amounted to 10 cents an hour.
