AR-15 Safety

Recommended Posts

A friend has an AR-15 that has the safety stuck in the safe position. I have removed the grip and checked the detent and spring and it does come out and the switch still will not move. Any suggestions? THX

Get a small diameter metal pick and reach up in the lower and grab that spring. It's bunged up and holding the detent into the safety.

Thanks for the info, but the detent and the spring came out fine and the switch is still stuck.

Sorry, misread that and thought you hadn't seen it. Hmmm. Can you move the hammer while pushing on the safety and get movement in the trigger group? Did ALL the detent come out?

I would say post up a pic but we won't see much.

Try and remove the trigger and hammer.

There might be something tween the safety and the back of the trigger.

Also with the grip screw out, Shine a light in there and see if by chance there is something there.

I can move the hammer back a little fighting the spring tension. The safety is completely stuck, though. I can push the hammer back and release is manually bypassing the trigger. From what it appears I did get all the detent out (Point is intact and bottom seems to be squared and not sheared off). The spring looks good, too. I am not knowledgeable about the AR-15 past breakdown for cleaning, but these parts seemed fine compared to the integrity of parts of other guns I have broken down.

I will see if I can get hold of the gun again and do this. Can I do this easily without a magblock?

I've seen blown primers fall into the fire controls and lock everything up.

Just push the two trigger retaining pins through and hold on when the hammer spring starts to uncoil. Look it all over before doing it so you get the spring back in the correct position when you put it all back in. It takes some pressure to hold the hammer down against its spring when replacing the pin.
