Took the J frame back down to Hero-Gear today to show off (it wasn't so pretty when it left there yesterday - I'd polished out all the oxidation and most of the scratches using H Ryobi, a compound formulated for Nickel, refinished the grips using Lemon Oil)... and I really wanted to look at that model 49 again and the square latch model 36... I took along the "the catalog", since all I know about Smith's wheel guns are what I've read in that book.

So the 49 is totally utilitarian, being parkerized with rubber grips. They've got a nickel model 10 heavy barrel.... The Nickel Model 1903 .32 hand ejector was tempting...

But, the M&P of 1905, 4th change with the "rare" square butt will probably clean up best. From my years of collecting vintage european military arms, I've found an old pair of nylons and liberal use of a thick gun oil (I use CLP Collectors), is best at neutralizing and deminishing surface and spider rust without effect to the remaining bluing. It won't restore a finish, but it goes a long way to reducing the visual effect of blemishes and prevents further corrosion.

Here is the gun after the 1st cleaning. 2 or 3 more will follow... you have to go slow, and I get bored. It takes hours of careful rubbing and my fingers get tired. I'd guess I've already removed well over half of the rust.

Hero-Gear is having a big sale on Saturday. They have a huge inventory, with a large number of confiscated weapons and multiple items to fit every budget and taste. Lots of shotguns, including an Ithaca high-grade model 37 that needs a lot of love, but the wood is just stunning, a bunch of 1100 Remingtons, piles of S&W wheel guns. They'll be giving away a Glock. You all need to go down there Saturday and clean them out and remove the temptations for the path to my quick divorce... Did I mention the 2 colt .38 snubbies? one nickel, one park? Oh yes, you have to buy those too, to retain my marital bliss.
