I agree about the interstate shoulder being for emergency traffic only. The OP however (if I read this right) is not on the interstate but is in town. He got busted for getting into a turning lane before the white lines "allowed" him to. They bust people all the time for that in M'boro. I don't agree with that. If the turn lane is provided, what is the harm in getting in it a couple of hundred yards early. If anything, it makes the "going straight" line in traffic shorter.............

In M'boro they do it at the Memorial and Clark red light coming from Clark for about 1/2 a mile. I can't stand it.

Ah man, Steelharp, I didn't take you for a blow-down-the-shoulder-past-traffic guy. Come on!

That's not it at all. Read my post: "Ok, let me expound... it was Gallatin PD that lit me up. Nice fellow, liked that I had a HCP. Gave me a "discount," maybe because of that; I don't know. Anyway, it was a right turn lane off of 109 North Bypass up here that turns into Hancock Street. We were running late to school, and the traffic was really backed up at the light, so I entered the right turn lane a bit prematurely (shoulder) so I could get to the light and make the turn. He said I shouldn't do that, and gave me a $105 "reminder incentive sheet." Rats..."

It was slow, and I passed all of three cars. My daughter was going to be late to school, and I thought it better for her to be on time than get a detention... which she got anyway because of my hitting the shoulder... :)

"Turns out they were arresting EVERYONE who was driving down the sidewalk. That's profiling, and profiling is WRONG!" - Ron White

We call that Side Walk Surfing in Knoxville.

I remember a few years back when I was in college a friend had to make a sudden right turn to avoid a car and ended up on the sidewalk. He had to finish the short block, got off the sidewalk parked and was to scared to drive the rest of the day. I had to take over and I was only afraid of getting stopped and being accused of driving on the side walk after the fact.
