Isn't it the same thing as driving down the shoulder on the interstate to get to your exit? THP will certainly bust you for it.

Franklin has really cracked down on this because there are too many people who think that the shoulder is a right-turn lane.

Ouch! Who pulled you over? THP?

... that it could cost $105 to take your kid to school... if you use the shoulder to get around a mile of traffic...

I hate that you have to shell out your money, but I am glad that the cops ticket for that. I hate sitting on I240 during a slowdown/accident only to have two hundred people pass on the shoulder. I like the idea of having that lane available for more emergency vehicles to enter/exit the area not for people who don't allow enough time to get to their destinations.

Grinds my gears.

If I am turning left at redlights I try to leave room for people to go right on the side but going down and skipping traffic by a mile is pretty unreasonable.

I was with my wife the other day and a car had stalled where Old Hickory meets Hwy 100. Most of us were going around to the left lane and then going back to the right lane to turn. Three cars decide to go off road into the park and then whip back into the lane almost hitting us because they couldnt wait in line like everyone else.

THIS.

It really pisses me off when I see folks doing that.

Very considerate of you, but I never go around when someone is turning left. If they change their mind and decide to go straight it could be messy.

Yeah I am specifically thinking of that intersection @ OHB and HWY 100, where it has two lanes and both can turn left while the right can turn right as well.

Was listening to the radio one afternoon and the DJ was venting frustration about a wreck she was reporting and how people wouldn't use the emergency lanes to go around. Misinformation from the media? IDK. I'd like to know all the reasons paved shoulders are built.

I think it's one thing for the person at the front of the line to go onto the shoulder to move around a wreck, but it's an entirely different thing for someone to go up the shoulder from the back of the line. Not a cop, and I don't know the law, but that would seem to be common sense to me.

She was saying everyone should all go around in a calm and orderly fashion ... yeah, right! She was on the verge of losing her license when she screamed, "Everybody move around on both sides and haul ass."

I have also seen those same people try to squeeze back onto the interstate after they have driven a mile on the shoulder and encounter a stalled car. Now the idiots behind him/her have the shoulder blocked for a mile.

The shoulder is where the wrecked cars are suppose to pull off to if they're are no injuries.

If the wreck is bad enough where they can not move them or if there are injuries, then the shoulder is supposed to be kept clear for emergency vehicles to get around the traffic.

Ok, let me expound... it was Gallatin PD that lit me up. Nice fellow, liked that I had a HCP. Gave me a "discount," maybe because of that; I don't know. Anyway, it was a right turn lane off of 109 North Bypass up here that turns into Hancock Street. We were running late to school, and the traffic was really backed up at the light, so I entered the right turn lane a bit prematurely (shoulder) so I could get to the light and make the turn. He said I shouldn't do that, and gave me a $105 "reminder incentive sheet." Rats...

I'm probally going to get flamed for thsi but the people who drive up the shoulder really get pissed at me. If I see them coming I pulll 1/2 way into the shoulder to keep them from getting around. Their life is no more important than mine or the other 200 folks stuck on the interstate. Funny they don't even try to go around my big white truck once it's blocking most of the shoulder. B)

I do that with my squad car sometimes. Amazing when I look in the rearview mirror how far back I can see them trying to get back into the traffic jam. :D

Look, its simple, the shoulder is there for 1 main reason. When your bleeding to death couse some idiot just merged into you going 70 mph, the Ambulance needs a clear lane to get to your ass, thats why they bust balls for using it. Cops give tickets for the income to pay for thier salary AND to hopefully get lucky and catch Bad People doing bad things. Their is Duality in EVERYTHING. Hate that they wont let good people go on principle(many times they do). Sucks bout the lost $105.00

I agree about the interstate shoulder being for emergency traffic only. The OP however (if I read this right) is not on the interstate but is in town. He got busted for getting into a turning lane before the white lines "allowed" him to. They bust people all the time for that in M'boro. I don't agree with that. If the turn lane is provided, what is the harm in getting in it a couple of hundred yards early. If anything, it makes the "going straight" line in traffic shorter.............
