free colt 1911

well, one of my customers came into my shop today and had a little gift for me! he gave me his colt government model 1911 that he bought in 1966 when he was a marine. he shot it a couple times and then put it up keeping it loaded and ready to go. it is a military issue and has marked on it "property of US army." it has some wear on it but is a great shooter(i took it from him 2 years ago and cleaned it, shot it and gave it back to him). i'm pretty excited! i know you guys want pictures but that will have to come later

how can you tell how old it is? it has a 6 digit seiral number starting with 83xxxx. does anyone know?

i wish i knew some of the things that gun has been through, being made in 1942 i am sure it has seen some action! probably in ww2 maybe korea or nam but who really knows.

we have a garage in madison and he has been a wonderful customer for years and years. he has 1 step son and grandchild that will havew nothing to do with him. i guess he looks at me like his son, he is a super nice guy and can't imagine why anyone would dis-own him.

thanks, we are very blessed, we stay busy year round. if anybody here needs a good mechanic let me know
