Alright fellow Memphians (and surrounding area people) here is a quick questionnaire for the purpose of market research for a project that will probably never happen in 10 years. There are ten questions all relating to a rifle range.

1: how often would/do you shoot?: How many times per month would you pay to use a rifle range in close proximity to Memphis?

2: How far would you be willing to drive?: What is the maximum distance that is convenient to you.

3: How long would you like the range to be?: The minimum distance of the range you would visit.

4: What type of area do you prefer to shoot from?: open field or covered awning, Grass or concrete?

5: What type of range behavior do you not approve of?: Types of rules do you prefer( one second between shots, no drinking ,no firing from a moving vehicle) [the last one is allowed in the orange mound shooting range :D]

6: Do you prefer a range which sells ammunition?: Would an on-site source of ammunition drive you away?

7: Would you rather buy guns and ammunition from a place with a outdoor rifle range?

8: Would you prefer a range that offers steel targets?: Does the loud dinging Aggravate you?

9: What hour's are most convenient for your life schedule: When would you want to go shooting?

10: how much would you pay per day/hour of usage of the range?

1: how often would/do you shoot?: How many times per month would you pay to use a rifle range in close proximity to Memphis?

Since memphis is clear across the state. NEVER! I shoot 2-3 times per month when employed. If unemployed and cant afford ammo I shoot about once a month or so.

2: How far would you be willing to drive?: What is the maximum distance that is convenient to you.

I will drive up to 30 miles to shoot.

3: How long would you like the range to be?: The minimum distance of the range you would visit.

Pistol 25 and rifle 150 yards

4: What type of area do you prefer to shoot from?: open field or covered awning, Grass or concrete?

Concrete

5: What type of range behavior do you not approve of?: Types of rules do you prefer( one second between shots, no drinking ,no firing from a moving vehicle) [the last one is allowed in the orange mound shooting range :P]

No drinking, shoot as fast as you want as many rounds as you want. Dont point the gun at anyone. Keep gun pointed down range at all times.

6: Do you prefer a range which sells ammunition?: Would an on-site source of ammunition drive you away?

I would if the prices were right on it. If they are like most gun stores heck no cuz they have a high mark up.

7: Would you rather buy guns and ammunition from a place with a outdoor rifle range?

No, I would prefer to buy from a place that has an indoor range.

8: Would you prefer a range that offers steel targets?: Does the loud dinging private you?

No, and no

9: What hour's are most convenient for your life schedule: When would you want to go shooting?

Make it open 8am-10pm something like that.

10: how much would you pay per day/hour of usage of the range?

15.00 tops and that is for indoor. No more than five for outdoor.

I can shoot whatever, whenever at my in-laws', but we've talked about it many times here and it always comes down to (1) the heavy cost of land North and East that's of high value considering the sprawl and (2) the insurance required to protect us. I guess that's why MSSA, which isn't all that far out, is so ungodly. [Or else they're just normal capitalistic Americans.]

"Does the loud dinging private you?" Wut?

1. At least twice a month depending on price.

2. 30 miles

3. 100 yards

4. Some sort of cover would be nice to keep the sun from cooking you in the summer.

5. Fast shooting doesnt bother me, but nothing that would endanger my life.

6. Usually load my own....

7. I purchase firearms from places that have good prices on them...

8. Steel targets ok with me

9. Weekend mostly

10. Anything reasonable, there is no competition out here.

I am starting to see why there are no avalible ranges. way to many houses near Memphis. right now it looks like it would have to be either on HWY 64 or HWY 57 and both of those have lots or city sprawl until you get past rossville and oakland. Good news is I know an investor who sounds interested in the concept but I am having trouble finding a ball park on insurance.

Something within a couple of minutes of Oakland would be GREAT for me... Perhaps even down 194 or 196 between Hwy 64 and Hwy 57.

Out off Jenkins Rd is the only place I get to go shoot and its my aunt's in-laws land, so I can't just roll up at my leisure...

I don't have much preference on what the range is like, but sun-cover is nice, distances of 50-200 for rifles, 0-25 for pistol... I'd pay about $10 a day if it would keep me from having to check for horses and cows between every shot.

Hard to tell. We were so used to the County range on Walnut Grove that a lot of us are hoping Luttrell will straighten it out. Prob not, but still hoping.

What does this mean?:

Every other day

Not too far, within reason

600 to 1000 yards

covered and uncovered

When I was living in Kalifornia and SC the most popular ranges had a gun store on the property.

Steel is ok.. if only on a range that is specificly set up for that style of shooting..

I shoot anywhere between 8 am to 8 pm when light allows it.. or club rules allows it.. ORSA is 9am m-s to dark time basicly

Annual Dues

I would probably travel that far. Not long ago there was someone trying to open an outdoor rifle range here in Tipton County. Seems they met some opposition from surrounding land owners and it fell through.

I see in the Tipton County Regional Planning Minutes, it is still being discussed. It seems that every month it is on the agenda, but nothing ever seems to happen with it.

After a night of crunching numbers I am starting to see what someone else has not done it. I am figuring a 5K per month overhead and that is very conservative by all means. I imagine it could make a profit but it would take over 500 visitors per month to break even at $10 per head! that may not sound like much but you have to think about the people who will not shoot during the winter (some tarps and a space heater could help that though:p) then that overhead travels over to the summer and you end-up with a big ol pile of debt!''

So the way I see it is I would have to branch to other means of income like hosting gunshows, opening a gun-shop on the property and adding a vending machine. it is doable but I am not sure if the customer base it present in Memphis when they would have to drive an hour each way to shoot (45 min with 385 opening up)

I am unsure on how many gun owners are in Memphis but I imagine about half are satisfied with a pistol range and the other 50 is probably split between people who only have one for defense and people who hunt and plink with a rifle. and of those people you can only count and about half showing up monthly to blast at a paper target.

So even if I attract all of the rifle shooters I can only count on getting about 7% of the gun owning population monthly and that is if the rifle shooters like to plink which I imagine over half of those already have a place to shoot for free. so lets say 4% of gun-owners will show up monthly. that means that there would have to be 12,000 gun-owners in the memphis area! Now if we take out the "Gangsta" gun owners who use the orange mound and hickory hood ranges the margin for profit gets narrow as can be.

so what I am getting is that most of us will

A:shoot about 1-3 times a month

B: travel upwards of 20-25 miles or 45 min on the high end

C: want a minimum of a 200y rifle range and there should also be a pistol range.

D: prefer a concrete slab with a covered awning

E: Like common sense rules, No drinking or being irresponsible

F: A onsite facility with access to ammunition that is reasonable/cheap (and possibly reloading equipment/components)

G: Having guns forsale on-site is not a major factor but it is nice

H: steel targets are not a major deal

I: most people prefer to shoot between 6am-12pm and 5pm-8pm

J: $15 a day is reasonable for a nice facility.

------------------------------------------------------------------

from the information I am gathering I can set up a range as far out as east Fayette CO. as long as it is either accessible from 57 or 72 (depending on the drive time). I will need to set up a ammunition shop and the ability to host events.

My bays will probably be split into thirds. one side for rifles, one for pistols and a center area that is left open . they should also be a flip-up style bench so you can leave them down to fire from the table/standing or flip up to go prone.
