As far as I'm aware this is the first and I've been here since the site was just starting up. And it's not just "new members" there are people who have been here for a bit and are just becoming more active now for some reason. I have a problem with anyone who cannot sit down at a computer terminal and behave the same way they do (or should) in a public discussion. The internet provides too much anonymity sometimes and that bolsters the ego and attitude of some people.

.

Agreed. I tend to speak with the same demeanor both in person and on the Internet. I do tend to use a bit too much sarcasm, which many people just don't get in either scenario.

There us a tendency by some people to assume that anyone that disagrees with them is "wrong" and anyone that continues to debate their point after being told they're "wrong" just wants to "argue". It's a defense mechanism used to avoid having to admit that someone else may have a valid point. It's easy to fall into that trap when talking about self defense and legal issues, as the number of variables can make almost any point valid.

Impoliteness can come from any type of member. In the last week I've been called a liar and been told that I didn't know what I was talking about; both by senior members. It doesn't really bother me.....I've come to expect it on firearms forums. I'll guess, however, that it turns off alot of new members, which can't be good for the bottom line.

And it seeps in here.... ;)

Well, not directly. But, it certainly was a passive-aggressive shot at some members (me included, I'll guess. )

Just read it again.... I'm not thinking he's calling anyone out... Just the GENERAL CONSENSUS of stupid... Which, honestly, we are ALL a part of at some point in time...

or does TGO seem to be attracting alot of argumentative and downright unpleasant posters lately?

I know it's the internet and you're always going to have your wannabes and know-it-alls, but it seems like the past 2 months we've had more than usual. Between the constant religious debates, arguments, and just general asshatery TGO is really starting to suffer IMO. With some of the things that have been posted and advocated lately I'd hate to think that some of these people represent the firearms community.

I think that sums things up pretty nicely and I'll freely admit I think I'm the one who said you didn't know what you were talking about. While we disagree on the topic of that thread, I'm quite sure I may agree with you on others down the road. My intention with this thread really was not to just bitch about the "newbies" and wax nostalgic. I truly wanted to see if I was alone in my thought process and it turns out I'm not.

I'll even go out on a limb and say that your post and Desert Rat's posts in this thread go to show the true character of the person. You decided to come in with a witty comment and explain your thoughts. It was well received on my part and now maybe we can have a discourse and chalk it up to a bad experience, move on, and learn stuff from each other. Because that's what I believe this forum is best at. DR on the other hand, well...^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Both of these are true statements to some degree. It really wasn't intended to be a "shot" at anyone, which is why I didn't post names. Granted it was brought on by the multiple "I hate moderators", "PRAISE JESUS THE WORLD IS GONNA END", and random argumentative threads, but it wasn't intended to stir up further argument or start a newbie bashing post.

Ok, so before you guys ask why I deleted all the posts, here's the deal;

Everyone on TGO is entitled to their opinions, but at the same time, this is a private site so we can censor what we believe to be counter-productive to the discussion or the site in general.

TGO has grown exponentially over the past year, and with that brings folks with different personalities, backgrounds, beliefs etc etc. Not everyone is going to get along, and not everyone is going to agree. Discussion with differing views is wonderful, as long as there are no personal attacks.

If you have a problem with another member, take it to PM's

If you are routinely being harrassed by another member, report it (we do read these, we may not answer but we do look at every one)

But we can't allow these fewds to continue, no matter how trivial. The mods are going to continue to watch threads, and if someone starts an argument for the sake of doing so, infractions will be given.

Now I'm going to step down off my soapbox.

I want everyone to hold hands, and tell each other one nice thing about the other person.

Group sessions will begin at 5:00 in the main ballroom.
