What is the difference in the "N" or an "S"?

I just got back my dads 29-2 nickel plated that the serial # starts with "N". It has a scope mount that the bolts have been stripped. Going to get those removed. Really in good shape, my dad killed several deer with it. My brother had it for years, long story, and just got it back to me.

I love the old nickel guns. I had a model 15 and a model 19 in nickel back in the day. Still regret getting rid of them.

The "S" serial # guns were built before 1968. The "N" guns were built after 1968 (...the "N" serial numbers ran out about 1981; i think. ...). Some folks like the "S" guns and think they are better (...some folks collect the older ones...). My opinion is that they are both the same quality; one is simply older than the other. All that being said; the newer models (...the ones with the alphanumeric s/n's ..) are not the cosmetic quality of the older ones. In some cases, they are not of the same internal quality. Again, having said all that; they ALL WORK VERY WELL; no matter what the vintage. I believe the smith and wesson large frame double action is the king of the double action revolvers. We have several in all categories.

ps--I LIKE THE NICKEL GUNS TOO! THEY LOOK BIGGER -- HEHEHE. SERIOUSLY, I LIKE THE NICKEL FINISH; THEY ARE A THROWBACK TO THE PAST AND LOOK GREAT!!!

All that matters is you have a dash-2. I'm pretty sure that was the last model with recessed cylinders and pinned bbl.

This gun is tight. The cylinder spins easily, the hammer is firm and locks back nicely. The trigger.... Wow. Doesn't take much! Cant wait to shoot it again.

+1. Pinned barrel, recessed cylinder......these are marks of a true high quality Smith and Wesson, built when gun guys ran the company.

Key locks and MIM parts.....the mark of crap bean counters engineered and try to pass off under the Smith and Wesson name.

-3's had several areas reinforced to handle heavy .44 mag loads though. It's a split decision, and I love P&R.
