Agreed, practice on something cheap first... of like plastic... M&P grip inserts work well for this. There are several threads over on M4C, regarding stippling, with tons of info. How To, photos, tips, tricks, tools, etc. Definitely worth checking out if you're interested in doing some of this work to your firearms.

Pick up a cheap low power woodburner from a hobby store or hardware store, leave the 800 degree soldering iron powered off unless you want to burn right through...

Oh, and look before you leap, if you're an IDPAer and it's a Glock or M&P you'll be in ESP instead of SSP after the handiwork (if you care).

Big +one on start on something cheap. I practiced on plastic cutting boards from the thrift store before I worked up the nerve to go after my Glock. Also some pencil lines for reference unless you are doing the whole grip, really helps out a lot.

I got mine for 9.99 at walmart. Can't beat it.
