I am interested in a Mini 14 and I have been reading about them lately. I've read that the "580 series" released in 2005 after a major re-tooling is the way to go. How can I tell if a rifle is a 580 series? Does the SN start with 580? I'm sure someone here knows.

Yes, they have a 580- prefix on the S/N.

No, they aren't anymore accurate than the older ones. The sights that come with the rifle are possibly a bit better, but that is the only difference.

The target mini is actually pretty accurate and can compete with off the shelf 'match class' ar's. Of course, they are just as heavy too.

Thanks Mugster,

I just want it for doing a little plinking around the house. It seems like it would do that job alright.
