Relocation to unfortunate location

So, as of last thursday, I am now a resident of Illinois again. My wife's mother told us after our son was born, that when ever we wanted it, my wife's grandmother's house was ours for the taking since grandma is in nursing care with acute dimentia. My wife and I have been away from our families (we both grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago) for about 5 years now, and with us having a child at the end of last year (and her father passing two weeks before we got pregnant), we have been feeling the pull of friends and family. Couple that with an abysmal employment situation in Nashville, and a lees than $3k a year property tax (rent) on this house, and the decision was virtually a no-brainer. My only regret is moving back to this backwards, corrupt, broke state.

I plan on hanging around here (if y'all will still have me) for some time, as It will remind me of my transplanted home.

The things we do for family...

I will probably wind up back in security simply to earn the right to carry here... I also have to get my Nevada non-resident carry permit (I believe that it wil NOT cover me in Tn, however) so I can carry when I go visit friends in Indiana.

Highland Park is nice. Everything in life does not have to be about guns. You are not in Chicago so you can own and possess a handgun in the house. There are some hoops to jump through. But it could be worse. Do your part to change the laws there.

I believe it will. I'm not gonna take the time to look it up because someone smarter than me will be along shortly, but I'm about 99% sure that you can carry here on a non-res license from another state.

Be safe during your move and watch your back up there. Hate that you gotta go, but I definitely understand your reasoning.

Thanks for all of the well wishes, folks. Thanks Kb4ns and punisher for the legal legwork.

We are here, and installed for now. It sucks when I get ready to go out, and do a hip check, and nothing is there.

I've had a good conversation with my best homie, and he got my mindset straightened out. It's about thinking less about what I don't have available, and thinking about what tools I DO have (two pocket knives, and my sometimes necessary cane for my ankle arthitis), and how to effectively use them if needed. I'll be starting some escrima classes as soon as I find a good local teacher, and getting back into close combat shape. I'll go from there...

I do get a little sad when I look in the top drawer at my two Glocks, though...

Hey no joking man you can beat some serious ass with a cane. Crazy as this sounds I took Bo Staff in Tae-Kwon-Do for about two years. About 3 months in I asked my instructor what good Bo was for besides competition. He walked over to the closet, got a broom, snapped the end off and proceeded to do the most insane beating on a practice dummy I've ever witnessed. Changed my perspective on what can become a weapon lol

Truth.

Dan E., this site seems to be a good resource for gun rights in IL.

This page on "container carry" in IL is informative.

Hope you guys can get concealed carry passed up there. Persistence pays off. Come back to TGO anytime.

Thanks for the links. I am aware of the "container carry" exception, but I've been screwed before by local LEO's on a contained firearm. I'll support the efforts to get a CCW passed here, but until a major paradigm shift happens in Chicago (Get Daley OUT), it will come to nothing. THe politicians in that city want to control the sheep, and live under the resuption of "right to rule" with no regards for what the constituents of their city actually want. It's really a lot like communist soviet union. It's scary that Daley keeps getting re-elected, without any covernmental agency looking into things, and people not understanding how much he fleeces that city.

I'm here for my family, and because we need the ability to regroup as a family unit. It's a tough nut, but it's doable.

THanks, guys.

Bless your heart!!! I lived in Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream, and West Chicago, (worked out of Auroia, yep miss-spelled that) for 10 yr. After talk'n to my best friend last week, ( he still lives in West Chicago), I told my wife," there ain't enough Prozac in the world to make me move back to IL. I'll pitch a tent and drink branch water first!" That said, I really respect you for stepping up and do'n what's best for your family!! Good luck!!!!
