I've been cruisin' the Beretta forums about threading my CX4 barrel. There is a lot of talk of it not being 922r complient if the muzzle device is removable. I want to put a brake on my barrel. The barrel is 16.6". Are the regs. for imported rifles different once they are in the US? I'm not understanding the 922r. Never dealt with class 3 or other regs. Just looking for a simple answer. Thanks.

This is from another site but it explains it pretty good.

Here's how it works. The rifle "as-is" is 922® compliant. That means that in its current configuration, ATF has deemed it to be a sporting firearm and authorized its importation.

Now, you come along and want to start changing features on your rifle. You want a folding stock. ATF says that your rifle with a folding stock is not legal for importation because it is not a sporting firearm. 922® says that you cannot assemble a firearm that would be illegal for importation.

So basically, you can either leave your rifle configured as it was imported or you can play a little game ATF came up with that reclassifies your firearm from "imported" to "Made in USA."

To do this, ATF has made a list of parts that they consider major components of a firearm. You take the list and determine how many of the listed parts your rifle contains. It might be 13 or 16 or 19. Whatever.

ATF then says that if your rifle doesn't contain 10 or more "imported" parts, it is not considered an imported firearm. If you figured out your rifle had say 16 parts on the list, you replace any 7 parts on the rifle with US manufactured parts and your rifle is now "Made in America".

You can now make any modifications to your rifle you desire that are legal for any other US made rifle.

The parts list is:

Quote:

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings

or stampings

(2) Barrels

(3) Barrel extensions

(4) Mounting blocks (trunnions)

(5) Muzzle attachments

(6) Bolts

(7) Bolt carriers

(8) Operating rods

(9) Gas pistons

(10) Trigger housings

(11) Triggers

(12) Hammers

(13) Sears

(14) Disconnectors

(15) Buttstocks

(16) Pistol grips

(17) Forearms, handguards

(18) Magazine bodies

(19) Followers

(20) Floorplates

.... Thats just silly. But rules are rules.

Even sillier is that you can replace the follower or floorplate of the mag with US parts...., or use a complete US made mag for three parts.

The BATF doesn't consider the firearm "assembled" until the mag is installed. :D

And even more silliness - - - there is NO requirement that the replaced parts be marked as "US" or any other ID! :)

And if you really want to start a flame-war..., log onto any of the AK Forums and start a 922r discussion with the question, "Has any private individual ever been charged with a 922r violation?"

Don't know why that's such a debate, as the answer is surely "no"?

Just FYI, no individual in the history of the USA has EVER been prosecuted for a 922® violation. Given, the BATFE are ruthless bastards who would eat their own mothers without salt, but I think even they realize if a 922® prosecution ever made it in front of a judge it would probably be laughed out of the court. 922® is simply a way to control firearm imports and make the Brady Bunch feel all tingly.
