+1. Usually, you get what you pay for. In your case, you'll get a bit more! It's a no-frills rifle, but it'll do the job well.

I have a Savage 110 in .30-'06 that I bought at Wal-Mart, and it is a heck of a gun. $330 at the time, polymer stock, came with a Simmons 3-9x40mm scope, and has the Accutrigger. It is easily the most accurate rifle I own. I have been thinking about getting another one in .243, actually.

I don't deer hunt but if I decided to I would want it to be up to the task. I would probally only use it for coyote and target shooting. I have a .223 so larger than that. Consider the cost of ammo in recommendations.

243, 270, 30-06, 308, 30-30. However, you're 223 will do everything you stated you might want to do, and ammo is cheap and plentiful.

I agree. .223 is a fantastic cartridge, and unless you decide to go deer or hog hunting, I think it would best serve your stated purposes of target shooting and 'yotes, and for much cheaper. .243 is another good round, though, basically a necked down .308, and has excellent ballistics out to 300 - 400 yards. What has me wanting one is the wide range of loads available: light bullets for target and varmint hunting, heavier loads for whitetail.

That said, it is hard to beat the ol' .30-'06 with it's amazing versatility: anything from 55 grain accelerators to 200+ grain sledgehammers that will take out probably any game animal in North America.

I guess mainly a personal preference on my behalf... I think .223 is a bit light to ensure a one hit kill for deer and hogs (big hogs, that is... I have used .223 and even 9mm on javelina before with good results, but I like something a bit heavier for a full-grown tusker). My personal minimum for these larger game animals is a .243, but if a .223 works for you, then by all means go for it.

Years ago I would have agreed with you. The technology bullet manufacturers have brought to us today, along with the trend of the heavier .223 bullets have made the 223 a formitable medium game cartridge.

I agree on the newer bullets but watch out for the length. A lot of the heavier bullets are longer and if you have a 1-12" twist they may not stabilize. A lot of the bullets are made for the newer AR's with the 1-9" and 1-7" twist rate. I am not sure of the twist rate on Savage bolt guns but I doubt it is that quick.

I stand corrected, just looked at their website and it does have a 1-9" twist. That should work well up to 70 grainers and maybe even 77 grainers. Yay to Savage....I wish all th egun manufacturers were as sensible as they seem to be.
