I have 6 pieces of 3/4" poplar that I need to plane 1/16th (or so) of an inch off of. There is a slight cup in the board.

Trouble is they are 12" wide. I have a 4" planer / joiner but that ain't gonna cut it. (Que rimshot!)

If anyone in the Memphis area has (or has access to) a 12" or better planer that they would let me use for about 5 minutes, I'd be more than happy to buy you a beer of your choosing....

Colco Fine Woods on Jackson Ave will be more than happy to plane it for me.... with a $35 min and a 20% surcharge (b/c it's not their lumber) plus tax is almost $46 IF they can do it in under 15 minutes.... youch! That's more than I paid for the wood!:screwy:

BTW... This is kinda firearms related.... I'm making a range box for black powder supplies that will look similar to:

In your situation I'd be tempted to buy a cheap harbor freight planer, but am always looking for a good excuse to buy a new tool. Honey I had to buy it now, or I won't be able to remodel the closet next year.

Father-in-law had a giant horizontal belt sander he liked to use for flattening. He said sanding can work better than planing, because planers tend to squeeze the wood and the cups can come back later. OTOH some wood will cup regardless of what you do. It may be even more difficult to find somebody with a giant horizontal belt sander.

Any cabinet shops near you? In SE TN you can't sling a dead cat without hitting a cabinet shop. Maybe a cabinet shop could cut you a better price? On occasion I've got real good prices for a wood shop or machine shop feller doing some quick little thing. Quick for him, impossible for me.

I had a commercial millwork / casework employee from the board step up to help out as well as a fella that I work with. I should be rockin' and rollin' here soon.

BTW - That's how I usually get all my tools too...
