Organ Donation

Here is my brother on one of the local morning news programs. He suffers from cystic fibrosis, and 13 years ago recieved a double lung transplant.

I am posting this to raise awairness that EVERYONE needs to become an organ donor. If a wonderful family hadn't decided to donate their thirteen year old daughter's organs, I wouldn't have my brother today.

Was at the attorney's office yesterday with Granny doing final papers, who was asked if she wanted to be a donor. She said, "No. Nobody wants anything like that from me at my age." When asked if she wanted to be cremated, she said, "No. It would probably hurt too much!"

Think I heard a "rim shot" there Jack...Benny

I am very Pro organ donation. My brother in law who also happens to be a member on TGO works for Tennessee Donor Services and they do a great work. It on my DL and this may be a bit morbid but we put donation stickers on our motorcycles too. Take it when I dont need it!

When I die I want my organs to be used to keep other people alive...that is if there is still anything left worth having. If someone reading this is worried that they might be allowed to die because their organs match a certain person with influence or money, there is an alternative to putting it on your driver's license. Sign a healthcare proxy or power of attorney and instruct the person you appoint (and hopefully trust) to donate your organs when the time comes (but not before). :D

This.

I have it on good authority that doctors, EMS, etc. will not try as hard to save you if they know you're an organ donor and a match for someone is needed.

That said, my husband and I agree that if something bad happens we will be organ donors.

My dad's girlfriends daughter was an organ donor. 6 people are now alive because she checked the box on her drivers license and talked to her mom.

As an EMT, I have to disagree with that crystal.

I will do everything humanly possible to save someone, regardless of their donor status. I don't even bother with ID until they are stable and in the back of the ambulance. And everyone I have ever worked with has done the exact same.

We have far too much on the line to not try our hardest. Letting someone die for their organs goes against everything we are taught, as well as criminally negligent. Like PMITA prison negligent.

I'm all for Organ Donation and blood donation and have signed up as an organ doner myself. It's just amazes me at how much the medical profession gets to profit from it. . . Don't be hat'n, just say'n. I also like to donate blood, but am unable to because I was stationed in Germany during the whole mad cow fiasco. . . .

When I die, if there is something in my body that actually still works.

They can have it, better for someone to live because of my death, than to be let someone die because I figured I needed to be whole to go to heaven.

Word. There's a kid at the local kart track with CF. I guess he's about 10-ish maybe. He races with something similar to a fireproof headsock, only finer to keep out the dust. Every time I hear the myth that doctors "won't try as hard" I think of what his life will be like in 8-10 years. I've got a doctor in the family and med. personnel as friends. I know this is some Snopes-like myth...like the cancer spreads when air touches it stuff...

That is a great story.

I am an registered organ donor, and I try to educate people whenever I can. It is strange to me how much "religious" push back I get. I told a person just yesterday that if my organs can give life back to a mother, father, child, brother, sister then I don't care where I spend eternity.

A good friend of mine (and masonic brother) was critically injured in a motorcycle wreck a couple days ago (the family took him off life support Tuesday night) and he was an organ donor. Knowing that the loss of his life will give others a chance is really helping the family grieve. He was only 26.

Thanks for sharing your brothers story with us.

That's really repulsive. Isn't that the same group that's fervently "pro-life"?

This MIGHT only apply if you are brain dead, and even then it is a long stretch. Not many people would risk jail time to kill you for your organs. Your family will question why you were randomnly taken off life support. In prehospital care, we do not have enough time to worry with this bs. We only let you die if that is your wish, and it needs to be documented.

Once agian, I call BS. Where did you hear this? I have worked in the most corrupt TN city and never met a nurse, medic, or MD who would do this. There are many problems with healthcare, but this is NOT one of them.

Gotta agree with Kegger. I was an EMT and learned

and treated the same way. There were jokes in the

hospital that the "vultures" were called, but that was

after a real solid case was made that the donor was

actually going to die. The "vultures" have a short time

span to do what has to be done for harvesting organs

and it is done with preserving life on both ends. It's a

myth.

I'm a donor. Once I'm gone I couldn't care less where my parts go. If they're used to help someone else, good. If they're ground up for hog slop, good. No sense in wasting them by sticking them in the ground, in a box.
