I agree but then again, things worth doing well or that takes talent usually is expensive.

Most good firearms are pretty expensive and the HCP classes, although I'd say are generally reasonably priced, aren't exactly what I'd call inexpensive! :D

Moreover, whatever it might cost the private sector to do it, I'm sure the state of Tennessee spent more!

I'm not talking firearms expensive, unless maybe you're talking some Barrett 50's. I've seen the bills on some video shoots/production when we supplied talent. I think the state video is cheesey for a reason. It may be possible to get it done, but won't be easy or quick without a serious budget.

I'm sure it would be an expensive proposition.

I guess my point is that I don't see that providing this training video is necessarily a state function in the fist place - that maybe this is something that the private sector should do and is better equipped to do for itself. :D

I agree with that. Just can't figure out who would pony up the cash

Well the state has to provide some sort of oversight for the HCP program in accordance with TCA and they put the first video together because they rightly expected that while there are many instructors qualified to train the shooting part of the course, very few were proficient enough to cover the law. This way there was some uniformity provided. Since the laws changed and the state refused to keep up with them the video became uniformly stupid. If they would do their job the way it should be done they could put out a good product at a cost that would be manageable. Not too much to ask for or expect unless you factor in the fact that we are talking about state bureaucrats here.

...Never mind that we don't have to know this as when carrying our firearm with a permit we can have NO booze in the blood. ...

That's really not true, you know.

The gray nature of "carrying under the influence" has not changed.

EH????

He's talking about you can't drink in a bar while carrying, but it's not illegal to have a beer and then leave the house with your gun on. Not something I practice, but it's not illegal unless you're impaired.

But, "impaired" isn't well defined. It's gray.

Now if they'd only let Mystery Science Theater 3000 get a hold of it. Then I'd gladly watch it!

That would be hilarious.

I took my HCP classs today at Austins TN Firearms from TGO's very own Phantom6 (Hi Mike). :)

Yeah the TN DOS video (OK, DVD ) is definitely in need of some "Professional" help as has already been pointed out.

The content gets the important points across but it has no "cinematic quality" or curb appeal if you will, at all.

Mike did a great job teaching the entire course :( and answering questions that we had after watching the video.

Recommend Mike (Phantom6) as an instructor or for the HCP course that Austins TN Firearms offers.:wall::up:

He also incorporates the NRA's Basic pistol Course with the TN HCP course (BONUS!).

Now if the TN DOS would just produce a decent, current, contemporary video and keep it updated that would be just Super.

OH and if they could get my permit to me in WAY under 10 weeks THAT WOULD BE FANTASTIC!

I'm not gonna get excited and expect either of those two things above to actually happen before Christmas. :(

Yes, that's the gist of it.

It is not illegal to have a drink and carry per se, but only to have that drink in a public establishment that sells it for onsite consumption.

So in the one case, you can be arrested/fined and lose your permit for 3 years for having one drink , even though you may not be "under the influence", while in other cases, you can only be arrested/fined for being "under the influence", but not merely for having the drink; and in that case, your HCP isn't even in jeopardy.

And since "under the influence" is still only defined by any given LEO's judgment, it's still plenty gray.

I viewed the new movie, I was surprised about the stress that they had put on the alchol thing. It could have saved them some time on the video, if your carrying, NO ALCHOL. All done. That summed it up.

That's good advice, but it's not the law.

A number of TN weapons laws are contradictory, gray, or just outright absurd, which is why they are so difficult to understand, let alone "teach".

Lawyers disagree as to their meaning.

There are some that you would be better off violating if you did NOT have a permit, which to me indicates the height of the absurdity.

After seeing the vid. clip, I thought to myself, self, am I in a class for carry or a chemistry class? Not to mention the section that covered the illegal and legal drugs.

I can't quite see physical state of being drunk, sober, or somewhere in between would change the facts so that an otherwise justified shooting became non-justified.

Good thing about America is that everyone has their own opinion. I respect yours, mine is that if you drink and shoot someone out in public in a self defense situation then your butt is grass.

But you wouldn't be dead...

You would need a pretty clear cut shooting where being mentally impaired would not be a factor.

If you were justified in shooting, but missed and shot an innocent bystander your BAC level could cost you years in prison and every dime you have.

So if I'm sitting at home, enjoying a drink, and a chainsaw wielding fool busts in and tries to hack me to pieces... what do I do? Do I let him murder me for fear that my BAC level might reflect poorly on my decision to defend myself? Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

They should do a series of short clips about individual topics rather than a single monolithic video. That way if the law or its interpretation is changed, they can update only the affected short clips and relatively little cost and still keep everything official. Put it all on YouTube and skip the distribution costs, too.
