Question on Selling a Handgun Across State Lines

If I sell a handgun as an individual, to an individual in another state, I know I need to use an FFL. But do I have to have an FFL in TN ship the gun to an FFL in another state, or can I ship it directly to that FFL in another state?

Legally, you can ship to an FFL in another state. However, some FFL's will not accept a firearm from an individual as their own policy. Check with the licensee you're sending the gun to.

It's often cheaper to ship it from an FFL since they can go through USPS with handguns.

You can also hand deliver the gun to the buyer's FFL. I have done this many times when the buyer was close to the state line.

Long guns too. You can purchase a long gun from an out of state FFL and bring it home.

You have to take possession of a handgun from an in-state FFL. If you buy out of state, the handgun has to be transferred to a FFL in your state of residence.

A rule of thumb is any gun that crosses state lines is going to require a FFL to get involved to stay legal. There are exceptions in the case of wills, etc.

That is 100% incorrect. By federal law, if you are selling a handgun to a resident of a state other than your own, you MUST ship or deliver it to an FFL in the buyer's home state.
