Ruger Blackhawk .30 Cal Carbine

I was visiting my parents in Ohio and dad and I went to the local shop that had an indoor shooting range to run through the pistols and shotguns. When we were done, like always, I browsed the pistol cabinets when I found a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Cal Carbine. Well I couldn't pass it up, I have a friend that has one and told me good luck ever finding another one, granted I know they are still made so it is something that can be ordered, but for $445 it was mine. One thing that I'm looking for is some decent ammo, where can I get like UMC or something other than Black Bear in the Nashville area? The next thing that I am looking for is a Hogue Mono Wooden Grip, where can I get one without ordering online? I also wanted to put it out there that if you haven't gotten the chance to fire one of these you're missing out. Any help with the ammo or grip is appreciated.

I'm a big .30 carbine fan. I don't have the handgun, but I do have a carbine.

You really need to reload this round. Reloader's Bench in Mt Juliet did carry Alabama Ammo factory reloads for about $25.00 per 50 rounds. I believe I've seen .30 ammo at G&L, along with Guns for America. However, if you reload you can cut that in half or better. I'm loading jacketed bullets with brand new brass, and the last time I did the math on it I was paying around $12.00 per 50. The brass can be reused, so you can really take that cost out of the equation.

WalMart sells 30 carbine ammo; at least the one in Lafayette does. It's gotten harder to find, and crazy expensive. I'll give you a tip on the revolver....WEAR EAR PROTECTION!!!! Those things are freaking loud!

I find rifle ammo won't even print on the paper with my Blackhawk. I reload a bit lighter for the revolver.

I was at Academy Sports today. They had 30 Carbine ammo......for $46.95 per box!!!!!!

cheaper than dirt has it, starting at 12.95 for tula, and going up to something like $25 for 50. I looked yesterday as chance would have it.

One word for a blackhawk in 30 carbine...........LOUD!!

It cracks louder than my .44 mags. Not a bellow, but a honking loud crack. They are actually quite accurate little shooters too. There is something you might not have noticed about that caliber blackhawk. Unlike the rest it has a tapered barrel.

Every time you shoot it at the range you will have people ask you....what the heck is that thing you are shooting that spits a 4 foot fireball

They can be had around Memphis if you look but they will run $450-$500

I can pick up boxes of 50 count Remington brand .30 carbine for about $40 and then reload it for 20 somthin cents and it is all day fun

I was looking for one so I could ream the chamber out to use 7.62x25 Tokarev and be able shoot cheap surplus ammo as well as handloads. I was never able to find one for what I would consider a reasonable price. I was going to load it with heavy subsonic loads I worked out a while back.

The 7.62x25 Tokarev uses the more common .308 bullet rather than the .311 bullet like other combloc calibers. This makes it easy to get reloading components for reloading. I have done a metric ton of testing and reloading of the Tokarev round in various flavors. Mostly I have even loaded it with heavy bullets at subsonic velocities. This results in a rifle that was a quiet as a 10/22 firing subsonics out of it 16" barrel. The energy levels of this load were equal to a 357 magnum yet were very quiet even without a suppressor. These subsonic loads are now being used by several people who are working on them for use in LE applications. They can use the cheap surplus for practice then use the subsonic rounds with suppressors. The rounds are as quiet as a 9mm yet have more energy and offer better performance at longer ranges. They will also feed from standard magazines.

Why not 300 whipsre you ask? Because it costs so much more all the way around. Factory ammunition is expensive and hard to find. Brass is expensive if you don't want to make your own. Dies are expensive as well and there generaly is a waiting period as they are considered custom dies. Chamber reamers are expensive as well. While the 7.62x25 Tokarev has readily available factory ammunition, brass, dies as well as reamers and all are very inexpensive when compared to the whisper round. And as long as you plan on keeping the bullets subsonic then both rounds are comparable in performance.

Not to sure where the Tokarev thing came from....anyways back to the original thread. I finally found my Hogue Mono Wood Grip, Allen's Gun Shop had one...the only shop in town that had one. It wasn't the Cocobolo wood that I wanted but it was the Goncalo Alves which has a good grain pattern. And to bring this thread out of the worthless realm for Alpha and all others out there he is the .30 cal Blackhawk with new mono grip and my Stoeger Coach Supreme:
