What do you recommend for an airline approved case for my AR15 I just picked up? Come Christmas time I am going to want to fly to Michigan and see some family and do some shooting up there while I am at home. So I'm just trying to look into it now before I get to the time where I absolutely NEED to purchase a case.

These are pricey, but I imagine a Storm Case would be approved.

I have heard that gun mfg companies fly theirs to shows with reps in guitar cases. Checked and locked of course. They use the guitar cases because they are less likely to be stolen at baggage claim than gun cases. IIRC they "aged" the cases so they did not look valuable.

I use pelican / storm cases for overseas travel and have never had a problem.

That's interesting, since guns and guitars can cover the same range of values.

They are disguising high end rifles as low end guitars. They hope that no one steals what looks like a $60 guitar but is really a $9000 gun.

Pelican cases big enought to hold the rifle are airline approved and give you the option of having several locks.

There are many cases airline approved, that doesn't mean they are any good. All they have to have for airline approval is hard sided and lockable.

I would strongly recommend a very very solid, hard plastic case such as that made by Pelican(their high end line, Storm, or Starlight. Those, along with Americase, and Boyt is now coming along, are what most manufacturers travel with their guns in for shows and such. That is also what most international travelers use. Please believe me on this, you want the best case you can afford.

Pelican, Storm and Starlight are used by the military for their guns and electronic equip. And you know those cases take an absolute beating.

The AR could be broken down into a lower and upper then shipped in a shorter Pelican case. The shorter case would be less likely to be mistaken for a rifle case. Mark the case with "caution, HIV/AIDS samples" you could leave that in the Detroit airport for a week and it would be there when you come back.
