I can't beleive I actually read all 16 pages. I really like the Zombie apcolypse stuff better. Atleast that's one thing we all could ban together on.

There was an old SF story, can't recall the title. It was about a disaster and the 'hero' realizes that it is every man for himself. The hero begins living by the law of the jungle. Then a couple of weeks later, after the guy has set himself up as the local warlord chieftain, the emergency is unexpectedly over and the hero is in deep sh*t over his deeds.

Last few pages of thread are also reminiscent of "The Lord of the Flies."

Has been instructive in one way-- Decent odds that there will be lots of folks with mahahn's attitude? Maybe one every few blocks? In that case, bug-out travel could be risky, having to pass thru all these guys' territories? Bug-in might be advisable when possible, at least in the initial stages until some of these guys have thinned each other out.

One advantage about bugging out to woods in the initial stages-- A few days into the TV coverage of Katrina, watched a news crew on a rescue boat. They encountered a young fellow sitting on a wall, who looked in great shape compared to the typical citizen. Clean. Well-fed. Asked where he had been, the fellow said he had been with a bunch of folks camping outside of town on one of the high spots of a flooded highway. Away from the violence, with adequate supplies. In a temporary emergency, camping out sounds better than down at the SuperDome or in the 9th ward.

Man historically thrives because of his ability to cooperate and specialize in social groups. In a sustained emergency, neighborhood defense/supply organizations on a block-by-block or street-by-street level might be a first atom of successful survival organization. The small communities who are most capable of effective cooperation might be most successful at survival?

Because small groups would have to expend too much labor on security compared to making food/supplies-- Continued success would depend on successful alliances of larger groups of streets/blocks/burbs. Assuring sufficient population for specialization so that only some of the members would need to guard the perimiter, while the remainder can work on food and other essentials. At that stage it would require careful diplomacy to avoid unfortunate resource or leadership wars between neighboring fiefdoms.

Ability to make booze might be a very useful trade skill after the SHTF--

I had wondered earlier if anybody had read that... or at least had seen the one movie of it that was made back about 20 or so years ago.

There were two, one British in '63 and one US in 1990.

The old one is better, and the novel better than that.

Of course the old fart thinks the old one is better

Mahahn's comment might have been in poor taste, but I'm pretty sure he was kidding or making light of the internet survivalist commando's. But, if everyone wants to get all worked up and high and mighty over a comment thats in poor taste.......

In MY WORLD its innocent until proven guilty.....

Am I the only one that got a PM from Mahahn, explaining his intentions behind his comment?

Oh, and it was the 1990 movie that I'd seen, O.S.

Read the book a very long time ago too.

Good luck with that. You'd probably last about 30 minutes.

Maybe take some advice from others here and actually prepare so you don't have to become a murderer in order to take care of yourself. But I guess that's not as fun as your Dawn of the Dead fantasy...

Well said! After reading quite a few of his posts, it's clear that he should lay off of the video games.....and stay away from Red Box for a while.
