Would Quik-Clot be a good addition to a hunter/shooter's medical first-aid bag?

Also, do you have to get a prescription for the Lidocaine, or is that otc meds?

I've hit my leg a couple of times with the 'ol chainsaw...but luckily, It was minor and no sutures were required. Now I have a heavy pair of leather motorcycle chaps I use for logging endeavors.

You'd have to come by the lidocaine from a Dr. I imagine. I don't know if you can just get a scrip for it. Quik-Clot is good, but stay away from the granules. I'd get the sponges and dressings.

The celox impregnated gauze is good. It combines two steps. Blood clotting agent and wound packing. Good stuff to have at hand.

I'm not sure of the efficacy of "Qickclot", a lot of those fast clotting products will actually do tissue damage and make suturing difficult. If you can get it, thrombin or Surgifoam would be better but thrombin is insanely expensive and would require an Rx and storage is a problem.

And yes, you would have to get an Rx for lidocaine because people can have severe allergic reactions and if too much is used it can cause cardiac arrhythmias

The earlier granulated versions of quick clot would cause minor burns due to it heating up. Does the newer quick clot and the celox cause the same damage? I was under the impression they had fixed this in the newer formulations.

I will also add if you are a private citizen, do not apply a hemostatic agent to another person. You are not covered to do this under the good Samaritan law.

My understanding is Celox is no longer exothermic. I'm not sure about the latest formulation of granular QuikClot, but I believe they are made by the same manufacturer, so would guess they both are.

I don't recommend Quik-Clot. Too much risk of being told it's a new formula, and it being old stuff.

If you really need a hemo-static agents, use Quik-Clot's Combat Gauze. Not exothermic, and you pack the wound so you know where it went.

But really, a tourniquet is all you really need to stop severe bleeding, and it is covered under the good samaritan law.

The laceration was 2-3/4" long, 1/2" wide, about 3-4mm deep. 7 vertical mattress sutures and 1 simple suture.

That is the cleanest chainsaw cut I have ever seen. You are one lucky man. Usually, there is a lot more tissue loss due to the width and action of the blade.

you are lucky, could have been much worse. Chainsaws can be very dangerous. I only use mine when there is no other choice.

some years ago my younger brother hit his thigh with a chain saw. Cut through the pants but did not leave a scratch on his skin. Miracles can happen.

Both sides were trimmed up. There were ragged flaps originally.

looks like the ER did a real nice job on you, should only be minimal scarring.

I dunno but I have been told that a ragged cut is easier to stitch up cleanly, more so than a smooth slice is.

I have to ask, In your list you have a 14g cath. I also noticed you do not have any IV supplies listed. What is the use for the cath? Chest decompression?? maybe???
