BBC News - Iran unveils first bomber drone

Iran has unveiled what it says is its first domestically built unmanned - or drone - bomber.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the plane could serve as a "messenger of death", but that its key message was one of friendship.

Iranian state TV later showed the "Karrar" aircraft in flight.

It said it had a range of 1,000km (620 miles) and could carry two 250-pound (115kg) bombs, or a precision bomb of 500 pounds.

The plane is the latest in a series of new pieces of military hardware unveiled by Iran.

"This jet is a messenger of honour and human generosity and a saviour of mankind, before being a messenger of death for enemies of mankind," President Ahmadinejad said after unveiling the Karrar at a ceremony with defence officials.

"The key message is friendship," he added. "We must make efforts to render all the enemy's weapons useless with our defence potential."

The unveiling came amid continuing concerns over Iran's nuclear programme.

Western states suspect Iran is trying to obtain a nuclear bomb, though Iran says its programme is designed to boost domestic power supplies.

On Saturday, Iran began loading fuel rods at the Bushehr nuclear power station built and operated by Russia.

The US said it saw no "proliferation risk" from the plant, though Israel condemned the move.

distance form Iran to Israel is more than 620 miles.

so that bomber drone is just a paper weight

I saw a picture of it on Fox this morning. It looks like the old impulse driven bomber that Germany used during WW2.

Wonder if they recycled that old thing?

I sure hope Oblamy isn't the one discouraging Israel from making Iran go away.......

One, just because they said 620 miles, it may be much more. They hold back exact details.

Do you mean the V2 rockets used by Germany against London?

Well, remember back when Saddam Hussein was throwing a few scud missiles at Israel.

Seems like Bush may have discouraged them from retaliating back in 1991. Because

had they entered the war, it could have broke up other parts of the alliance with other Arab countries. As I remember, the country Jordan would let Iraq fly scuds over Israel but was going to back out of the alliance if Israel retaliated. To me, they where not really with us.

We gave Israel some patriot missiles to help defend against the scuds but still I could not understand why Israel did not just turn Iraq into green glass back then. I understand why our leader did not want that to happen. I even joked after wards we have drill bits that can drill though green glass.

Now it is going to be another 20 years of Iran, Afghanistan, and a dealing with a Ground Zero Mosque.

I bet when they build that Ground Zero Mosque, there will be more violence/riots in New York, then ever before.

I believe he's thinking of something just a bit older than that:

The Russian SCUD design that so many third world nations have is very similar to the original V2 design. Iran has been improving on the basic SCUD for many years, supposedly with decent success.

The SCUD is kinda like the Jennings Pistol of ballistic missiles. :)

An unmanned bomber would presumably be a reusable aircraft. Otherwise it would be a dumb idea to build a bomber to go on a one-way mission toting bombs to drop, the required bomb targeting equipment, etc.

If this device is not intended to be reusable, then it would be much cheaper to build a cruise missile (like an improved V1). A non-reusable cruise missile would cost less and carry a bigger payload. So you could build more of them in the same budget.

If this thing is reusable with a 620 mile range, but they want really really want bad to reach out farther, it ought to go up to 1240 miles on a one-way mission. Ferinstance toting a nuke.

I tried to make a post that might make sense that maybe 620 miles was to target and it would have enough fuel for a return home trip with no payload, however looking at the size of it, I just can't image it has another fuel to do much.

I even tried to consider it getting into a low sub orbit but I wonder if it would have the fuel to do it, that might be the only way it can even do the 620 miles.

I just did a rought miles between Iran and Isreal and is is just over 1000 miles but I am not certain what point inside Iran the starting point was. It might have been Capital to Capital.

So if the Missiles are started at the border that is going to shave some miles off and they might have other targets that might shave more miles off.

Plus we don't know how those are launched, those might be able to be launched from under the wing of a larger bomber aircard that might give them a boost to their range as well.

Then I remembered a man that was going to build a cruse missile with off the shelf Parts.

I played with google.

The Danger Of The Low-Cost Cruise Missile

The guy was building one but got shut down.

Cruise Missile

He going going to prove a point that you could build a cruise missile for like 10,000 dollars.

620 mile range is plenty when it’s on a mobile platform.

I wonder who made it?

If I were to venture a guess either China or Russia. China exports a lot of arms to a lot of nations. I wish we would lift the ban on Chinese firearms and ammunition. I wouldn't mid picking up a few dozen Norinco 1911's or a Norinco M-14.
