What is the law for window tint?

I have never had a problem with the window tint in VA. but I have an employee that has been stopped twice each time in a diff truck and was cited each time. I was stopped 2 weeks ago by a TN State Trooper, he was a hell of a good guy because I didnt have a current insurance card or registration in the truck. I have had the F350 for almost a year but have not drivin it much. The officer let me go with a warning as long as I show proof of insurance and get a front license plate. I called about getting a front license plate and was told they do not issue front plates,if I pull a trailer I am supposed to relocate the plate to the front of the truck.

Anyway, back to the tint issue,I had to remove the tint from both vehicles.

I could not find the registration for the f350 so I made a copy of the title and a new insurance card for the truck

after I posted it, I think the first and last are the same car from different angles. I had never seen that bottom one before and just noticed that as I posted them.

Yep, if I couldn't come up with something worse.

Some folks may think what I posted earlier is ridiculous, but I don't consider it any more so than an officer being shot while sitting in his/her patrol car with the mic to the PA in his hand, because he couldn't see the dip:poop: taking aim at him/her through the dark tinted windows.

wow, i did not expect this thread got so many replies. Thanks to everyone for info. I will get rid of the car in couple month, so I will just try to stay low profile.

BTW, when the cop stopped me, I always make sure that I roll down my window (the side officer approch) before he even get close to it. I understand amount of stress LEO deal with everyday, so I will always try my best to not piss off LEO.

Now, what about SUV or Minivan? maybe 35% in the front, how about back? can I have back install 15% on top of factory 20%?

As for the Van above, I had found a link with the story behind it, head it and lost the link. In short it was driving by a civilian EMT that showed up to try to help.

In TN, a commercial vehicle can have tint as dark as they like rear of the front windows, but not personally owned vehicles.

How does the state of TN define a commercial vehicle? I believe anything tagged for 26,001 pounds and up is, but what about smaller stuff? My work truck has 'weighted' tags on it for 16,000 pounds, along with a company name on the side. However, I also see a lot of privately owned pickup trucks with the same 'weighted' tags on them. Are they considered commercial?

Nope. Nothing can go below 35% except for the factory tinted glass. And then you can't put anything over it.

Also, I think you're confused about what the percentage means. "35%" is the VLT (Visible Light Transmittance). That is the amount of light that comes through (65% is blocked). 15% is darker than 35%.

This is the exact wording from the TCA - "Any motor vehicle bearing commercial license plates". So basically, if the tag has a little "H" in the number it's ok. There are other commercial tags, but those are the most common.

You LEO's would have a field day with my Jeep. My vehicle was originally setup to be legal in IL, with the exception of the fronts and the windshield tint strip. All my rear windows are factory 17% with 5% on top of that, fronts at 35% and my windshield has a strip that go's way to low and is 5%. Knock on wood that every time I've been pulled over, not often, the LEO's don't even mention it. I'm fixing to replace the windshield cause of a chip and get the fronts done in 5% instead of 35%. For the record I don't care if you LEO's know this info, I could care less and would pay the damn ticket. If I had to tear it off, I would just pay to have the tint redone.
