reduce the recoil a little, that steel plate really put the power to the shoulder:D

I'd say get a slip on rubber recoil pad for the stock if you're not man enough for the recoil. ;)

Nancy pad is the answer. Even the uber macho guys I shoot with use them. :D

If the average soldier who originally received one was expected to actually live more than a hundred rounds worth, the Russian army would have issued them.

PAST® Mag Plus Shield™

PAST Mag Plus Shield is better still, as you do not have to have a bunch of rifle specific recoil pads.

Used it with a M38, M44, M39 and 91/30 Mosins - plus a Marlin 30-30, SKS, and AR15 all in the same day - not one bruise and not any soreness...

If you think it wont be enough, go with the Super Mag-Plus

NOTE: can crack when used in Freezing Temperatures, but can be worn under your coat...

I bought one...

The muzzle break is too loose for the M44, IMO - it is only held in place by a small bracket which goes behind the front sight, and secured (?) by 2 small hex screws. I've read reports of these things flying off the end of the barrel after 25-30 rounds fired. Not good.

However it is too small for the 91/30, without some work...so after a LOT of sanding:

...I was able to heat the break with a torch, then hammer it on, using a wood block to protect the muzzle break.

And, I don't have a picture of the finished product, darn it! But the thing is pleasant to shoot with the ATI stock and muzzle break.

Someday, I'll finish this project and take more pics....someday.

Also, you must clean all those ports after shooting corrosive ammo.

that muzzle brake looks right up your alley Austin. Woud be great on a sporter like it is shown in the pic.

I plan to sporterize a mosin or too with a decent scope, muzzle brake, attached bipod, pistol grip stock which I believe I will have to make myself. basiucally a poor mans sniper gun. debating on a 91/30 or m44 that i got from you.

or m44 that i got from you

speaking of which, I still have your tool kit and ammo pouch. I assume you are not overly concerned but I have not forgotten.

I am not sure if I would sporter a M44, I think the 91-30 may offer better accuracy and you also do not have to deal with removing the bayonet.

I've put about 30 rounds thru, no bruises! Scope worked loose during the process, my bad, need to re-zero. Waiting for a good day...

Where? Built it myself. < $300 total, not counting labor.

Rifle is a 1943 M91/30 from Classic Arms $80 - a rough, cruddy specimen, but bright shiny bore. Had a nickel sized group with open sights at 100 yds, making it a good candidate for this project.

ATI stock, scope mount, and bolt kit from Sportsman's Guide, $85; also muzzle brake, $14; Pentax GameSeeker Scope 3-9x50 $72

Latest addition - UTG bipod from Centerfire Systems, $30 - haven't used it yet.

If you do plan to **** up that M44 I'd like the stock off of it please.

sounds like I will choose a 91/30 and with changing hte stock setup it sounds like it will be a little more managable.
