Hunter Safety Question

I took my class in Mississippi when I was a kid and haven't hunted since I moved to Tennessee. Of course, I have also lost my card at some point in 5 moves and 15 years.

My question is can I just get a replacement card from MS and be good to hunt in TN or do I need to take the TN class?

Hopefully it'll work. I did the boater ed thru Mississippi a while back. Didn't need TN as I was older than the cutoff, but needed it to boat in MS. When I tried to enter my info on the above link, it said they couldn't find me and gave me a phone number to contact them. Hopefully they'll find yours!

dont know if this will help but i do know that you can get an apprentice licsense for a kid, which allows them to hunt only one year without having the hunters safety program. maybe there is one for an adult also. surely your miss. card should be good enough

There is an apprentice license (good for one year only) for any hunter who has yet to take the hunter ed class, but yes, an out of state hunter ed class will work just fine.

It wouldn't be a bad thing to attend. The TWRA receives Federal grant money based on the number of students they have in the hunter education course. Take a neighbor kid along and attend. You might like it.

If I knew any kids I would. I just can't sit through that class again for no reason. I'm not saying "I know all" or anything, but I grew up hunting and shooting with my Grandpa, Uncle, neighbors, friends, etc and I remember sitting through that class at 13 just thinking "please Lord let them get on with it" lol

You can also take the course online, then all you have to do is go in for the "final" test and shooting req.

I understand. I was trying to get you to do a good deed. There are many kids around who'd love to go, but have no one to take them. They are our future as far as the second ammendment goes.

OK... I'm feeling like a complete dumbass. I haven't hunted in years, and can't remember the last time it wasn't on private land. Are you saying that you gotta go to school before you can go out and shoot wabbits in Tennessee? I certainly don't mind supporting the TWRA, but was never aware of a requirement.

You should be ok without it if your displayed age (54) is correct. From TWRA's website:

Tennessee Code Annotated 70-2-108 became law in 1985 and states:

(a) Every person born on or after January 1, 1969, before hunting, shall possess, in addition to all other licenses and permits required, proof of satisfactory completion of an agency approved hunter education course…

If you were born on or after January 1, 1969 you must possess proof of successful completion of a hunter education class before hunting in Tennessee.

Those under 10 years of age do not need a Hunter Education certificate, but must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years of age, who must remain in a position to take immediate control of the hunting device.

I believe there is some sort of exemption for those hunting on their own land, but I don't remember the details.
