I inherited a new pistol last night

Can anyone tell me any history or information on this pistol? My father has had it since I was born, actually before I was born, and he gave it to me last night. I have an SW9VE I use for my carry gun, so I'm going to let my son use this one for the range. He goes to the range with me sometimes, but doesn't like the kick of the 9VE. He's shot this one before so I know he likes it better and will enjoy shooting more with me. It jams every so often, so I'm going to take it in for a good cleaning and checkup before he uses it again. Anything else I should know about it?

On the barrel it says P.Beretta Gardone VT-cal. 22 L.R. Mod 948

Above the trigger, to the left of the safety, it says PSF 1952.

Very old Beretta, I would view this piece (myself) as a collector not a shooter. but that's me. If it's jamming it probably needs a VERY good cleaning.

IIRC, the Beretta Model 948 was patterned after the Beretta M1934, the .380 or 9mm Browning pistol used by the Italian military pre-WWII & during the war. It's chambered in .22lr of course. Sounds like it was made in 1952, which would make it pretty early in their production.

They made them in the 50's, called the "Plinker." They're a modification of their service pistol from before WW2. It's a bit of a collector's piece. A lot of .22s are "finicky" about their ammo, so you might try different brands.

Well I took it to the gunsmith today and dropped it off for a thorough cleaning and checkup. He said it looked like a good cleaning was all it needs. I hope he's right. I can't wait to shoot it again when I pick it up.

It looks like it would be a lot of fun to shoot.

The guys on the beretta forum said it was the one that ad calls "Plinker". Wow, $43 whole dollars back then. Of course I'd let you guys shoot it.
