Rem Bulk Pack Warning

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Picked up 3 of the Remington 550 bulk boxes a few weeks ago. I tried them in 3 different rifles and I am getting a lot of duds. Some will fire when restruck on a different section of rim but most will not.

I got them at Walmart and took them back today. I know they have a no ammo return policy but I took a several of the duds with me that had multiple firing pin strikes. I actually got them to exchange the Remington for Federal. Their not supposed to by store policy.

I will never buy the Remington 22's again. They were horrible.

I've had the same results with some Feds? You never know.

I've had good luck with the Federals....heard nothing but bad things about the Winchesters. I've shot 2k rounds of the Federal 550 bulk packs with no failures what so ever. That was out of a S&W M&P 15-22

I've had the same problem out of the Remington's. The even feel dirty. Bought the Federals last week and so far I've had no problems with the first 50 rounds. Brass is cleaner & brighter.

Remington .22 is total crap from my experience. Winchester is slightly better. The Federal is the best in my opinion.

Or at least in my MK II's opinion.

I agree on the Federal bulk packs. They did not have any of those so in stock I took the Federal 325 target packs instead. Picked up some more CCI 100 packs also. Started with 1650 rounds and trade down to 1175 rounds. But if they will actually go bang it will be worth it. I have shot the Federal bulk in everything I own with decent to good results. I can even make them work in my CMMG AR conversion kit. It is really finicky. I had to polish the extractor to get the cheap federals to work on it but they finally did. I have had mixed results with the Winchester but nothing even close to the Remington. This stuff was bang, click, Bang-bang-click, in everything I tried it in yesterday.

Side note. I shot some in my CZ452 Silhouette, this is a testament to the gun not the ammo. It still put 5 rounds of this crap into a 1" at 50 yards.

I bought a couple of cases of the Remington bulk pack about ten years ago. It was excellent, clean, accurate, and reliable. When I ran out, I bought a single pack, and it was awful!! Obviously, they decided to cut corners and lose sales and their reputation. I cannot understand why otherwise intelligent people decide to cut quality and destroy a company's reputation thinking that profits will go up. Profits may go up in the short-term, but when word gets out!!!! And once you get a reputation for cr@p, it's very hard to change that image.

I have even gone so far as mail them empty cases from a particularly bad batch of golden bullets.I was having 20% failure (you read that right - 2 out of every 10) on any 22 I would shoot it in....single six, nylon 66, springfield 15, 10/22, Neos. Nothing would shoot it. Their response 3 months later. It was the guns - not the ammo.

They make good guns, but their rimfire ammo isn't worth rotten horse s$#t in a landfill. It is such low quality I hope they shutter the factory making the crap and send all the managers of the operation to the unemployment line. Flat out rip off.

If you want to know what I really think.

I never noticed the Rem Golden Bullets as being much different from any of the other 36 grain bulk loads until the last 6 months or so, but they have sort of gone south.

I don't get misfires to speak of though, just underloaded rounds. The ones that go pfffft instead of bang. So far, and knock on wood, they've all made it out of the barrel.

It seems like the misfires are from priming compound not fully distributed around the rim. Usually, if I reload them in the firearm so that the firing pin strikes a different part of the rim, they will fire. Still, I won't be buying any more until I get a guarantee that this has been resolved.

those remingtons have been like that for years, funny thing is they are more expesnsive than the federals that rarely have issues ever. heck I remember when I hada bmf activator on my 10/22 and having about 3 ftf in a 25 rnd mag:poop:.

I have pulled alot of bullets from the duds only to find no primer in the rim:poop::rock:

I have also had some of hte rem hangfire, I hear the firing ping go clink and then.......BANG:tinfoil:

this is a problems they had since 08, there QC department must have gotten cut, and i have shot many of there 550 rnd bricks and federal too.

after having disapointing experineces like this from rem I am hesitant to buy anything more from them as it appears they are more concerned about throwing out quanity w/o any concerns about quality

The Rem Thunderbolts still seem to be okay. (who'll be first to say they're dirty?)

I've shot them since I was a kid, haven't noticed any diff in them.

They're one of the few 40 gr. bulk loads still left.

Thanks. We got that out of the way.

I don't think they're any "dirtier" than any other lead nose bullet.

Obviously you'll see more grunge in the barrel from non copper washed bullets, but I think most of it is the various lubes they put on them, not really from lead.

My 10/22's don't seem to care, though .. I clean them every couple thousand rounds. Maybe. Whether they need it or not.

Exactly. I can't recall ever shooting a "clean" round - especially in 22LR!

Just out of curiosity I sent Remington an email letting them know what happened. I got the usual automated response with a customary apology. They don't care. :)

They wanted me to mail the duds to them and if they determined they were defective they would replace them. :bowrofl: Luckily, I had already conned...convinced Walmart into taking them back. What can I say, I'm good. :bowrofl:

I think it’s 50/50 between the weapon and the ammo.

I had a Remington 597 that wouldn’t fire and feed anything but CCI Mini-Mags for the first 500 rounds. I started with the Remington’s and when I had problems with those I tried Federal; they wouldn’t even operate the action. After 1K it would feed most anything, but never failed with the CCI’s.

I had a box of Winchesters that I could hardly eject get out of my 617, but the CCI’s slid right out.

My Remington 552 SpeedMaster, and my S&W M&P15-22 don’t seem to be too picky. (But I’ve only had the M&P to the range once.)

Just seems to me it’s the nature of the .22. I have a lot of center fire weapons and I don’t have any that have ammo or feeding issues.

Are these being made in Mexico or something?

What Drewsett said is right on the money. I too have had negative experiences with Remington .22.

From the manual for my S&W M&P15-22…

Based on the design and action of the M&P15-22, Smith & Wesson recommends that you use the following brands and types of .22LR ammunition for optimal performance in your M&P15-22 rifle:

• CCI Standard Velocity • Federal American Eagle

• CCI Mini-Mag • Federal GameShock

• CCI Stinger • Winchester Super-X High Velocity

• Aguila Super Extra High Velocity • Aguila Super Extra Std. Velocity

Smith & Wesson suggests that you fire several boxes of a recommended brand of ammunition through your M&P15-22 before you put it into regular use to determine reliability of ignition and performance of your ammunition. If “failure to fire” or other issues should occur, try different recommended brands and types until a reliable load is found.

Through our testing, Smith & Wesson has also found that there are several brands and types of .22LR ammunition that do not perform consistently or reliably. Consequently, Smith & Wesson DOES NOT RECOMMEND that the following brands or types of .22LR ammunition be used in your M&P15-22 rifle:

• Remington Golden Bullet • Remington Thunderbolt

• Remington Target 22 • Winchester Wildcat

• Any and all sub-sonic brands and types

Please call Smith & Wesson Customer Service at 1-800-3310852 ext. 2905 if you have any questions regarding the recommended ammunition and maintenance of your M&P15-22 rifle.

Of the 4 major rimfire brands, CCI has easily been the most reliable for me in a variety of guns. It's more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

They don't care.

that's what i am trying to tell everytone. this has been a problem with them for over 2 years now. I have several rem cases that I pulled the bullets on that have 5-7 strikes and NO PRIMER IN THE RIM they would rather send out quanity instead of stopping production briefly to fix the problem. must be why there was so much of the rem ammo available during hte shortage when the others brands were very hard to find. the other companys must have had some downtime when the serviced there machines while rem kept making product wheter good or bad, just to make a $
