Should I be upset?

Here's my story. Tell me if I should be upset or not.

I brought a gun into a gun store (which shall remain nameless for now). After inspecting the gun, the gentlemen at the store offers me $500 trade value for it. I say, "ok thanks! Let me think it over!" He says, "ok great, the offer stands!" So today I go into the nameless store, pick out a gun I want, go to my vehicle and get the trade gun. I bring the gun in and he says he cannot honor his original value of $500. He says that he took alot of trades the last week (I witnessed two trades while standing there) and that he really doesn't want my gun.

Now I understand that it's one thing to not want a certain trade in for whatever reason, but to make an offer on it and take it back? So you tell me, should I be upset?

I'd try getting a $ on the back of a business card next time. Obviously, it would have no legal bearing, but could refresh his memory of an agreement/offer.

If a gun shop was going to give you five hundies for it you can probably sell for more than that on here (I note you're a benefactor). If he's added a lot of inventory I can see his position but I would expect a "sorry but..." thing.

I don't know......I can see both sides here. On one hand, the guy made an offer and told you that it would stand, but on the other hand he has a business to maintain and has to make a living. Trades = no expendable cash flow (but that's also not your concern!).....But I can pretty well say for certain that I would not be back to do anymore business with his establishment. I kind of stick to the old time values of a man's word is a man's word.

Besides, if he was going to give you $500, I'm sure other stores would offer up the same amount +/-......Shop around.

I can see both sides as well, perhaps he really did take allot of trades and needs to sale some inventory.

I would also like to know what you are trying to sale as well, just being curious. If worth 500 to a shop, probably worth more to a buyer.

Hell, I took a kimber tactical pro to trade for an HK p30 at classic arms. He offered me 300 trade in. The thing was I bought it a month before for 850.00 from Classic Arms. I ended up buying one from G&A...Go figure...

I wouldn’t be to upset over it. It’s you that didn’t make the deal not him.

Should you post the name of the shop here and let everyone rip on them? I wouldn’t; that would make you look like an azzhat.

Just like here. When some people tell you “I’ll take it†you can take that to the bank. Others come up with lame azz excuses why they let their mouth overload their azz; happens all the time.

Guys, My Dad was a horsetrader and my oldest brother makes his living doing the same. When you price something or make an offer, unless you put time limitations on it, you have made an "implied contract". In the old days this was just as binding as a signed and witnessed contract. Unfortunately perspective has changed on this over the years, if the business won't honor their original offer, politely tell them you walk a different path and don't do business with them anymore

I can see both sides of this. I think most respectable business should hold to their word but that's neither here nor there.

However, I do want to mention that what Bluemax said is correct. If there was an agreement made, even if verbally, it is still an enforceable contract if you wanted to get nasty about it. That's one of the few things I remember from business law 301.
