Gregory or Arc'teryx make good packs. Lots of waterproofing. Also pack covers are a good idea. You can go from "just a student" to "can't see me" in less than a minute.

what size bag?

what do you expect the bag to handle, just to get home or to your BOL, or for cross country evac?

I'm new to the concept of a bug out bag. But I believe I will be adding 72 hour supplies to it.

After looking at SUNTZU's post, I really like the Arc'teryx bags because most of them are watertight, but the Gregory bags seem like they would be more beneficial for having to hike longer distances.

Just remember it should contain what you NEED to survive. Don't make it insanely heavy. Even 35 lbs. is a lot to carry. Don't forget to add water to your camelback/Nalgene bottles and to add what ammo you are going to be carrying, if any. You are only a roaming refugee with a little bit more gear than most with a BOB.

Have you considered a medium ALICE pack? I'm hoping that i'll be able to get one of those next as my bag just broke (cheap zipper).

I just picked up a large alice pack and frame at the gun show for $20. I figured with a wife and 2 kids I needed something a little bigger. With using as the intent to get you to a final location that may take a day or 2 by foot if I have to. I plan on putting most types of stuff in there for must haves and will have a separate bag for food and water.

Kelty Redwing 2650 Backpack

Kelty makes a great pack. I have been using the same Kelty pack for 11 years and it still looks new, its been all over the county with me and it doesnt really draw much attention.

Large ALICE is the best deal on the market! The one problem with ALICE Packs is they look military, but you can make or purchase a cover from them that would, that wouldn't stand out so much. Still for the money, I don't think you can beat it.

You need to pick up a second pack for your wife and even a small pack for your kid. I have a pack for all five members of my family, including my 8 year old.

Repacked my BOB (actually a get-home-bag) today. Weighs in at 50 pounds, though 15 of that is food. Food weight is a self-correcting problem.

I use a Gregory bag. No way I'd try to carry that kind of weight in an alice.
