Remember, Liberia was created to "ship the former slaves back to Africa." Lincoln showed interest (at the least) in the idea.

The times back then were quite different, and nowadays, merely bringing up this piece of history can get me labeled something I am not...

The idea was not to incorporate the former slaves into the population, but to remove them. Costs, politics, and the assassination of Lincoln contributed to the events which followed the "Civil" War, changing what would be done with the former slaves... (FYI: Civil wars are when citizens bare arms against their own government. Succession war is what the U.S. Civil War was, as State Governments bared arms against the Federal Government, to remove themselves...)

Lincoln's goal was not to free the slaves. It was to preserve the Union. When he signed the Emancipation Proclamation it only freed slaves in the states in rebellion. Lincoln stepped on the Constitution to reach this goal.

Great clip.

I wish my ancestors had M1 repeaters like in the video. Things would be a lot different now.

Lincoln signed the EP to keep england and france from intervening. It meant little or nothing for domestic consumption.

Garufa, if you haven't checked out "Guns of the South" by Harry Turtledove, I highly recommend it. Not M1's but AK's. Fictional, yes, but a very entertaining book. Makes you wonder what might have been, had 1863 ended as it began, with Southern successes. I don't hold with slavery, but States Rights were certainly a part, and a large part, of the Second War of Independence.

Thanks, greenego, for posting the link.
