grow a pair and enjoy the phone they way it should come from apple LOL

Bite me.

My iPhone does everything I want it to....at least what I know it can do. I have always heard that jailbreaking will slow other apps down. Mine is fast, for the most part, and I don't want mess that up. Did I mention, bite me. :shake:

I have an Ipod 3G but I still am not sure what "jailbreaking" does for you. Can someone tell me the utility of this so I can make an informed decision as to whether or not I need to do this to mine.

Reasons to Jailbreak:

Access to T-Mobile GSM Network

The biggest problem with the iPhone is not the "death grip" that blocks your mobile signal -- it's AT&T. AT&T has exclusive rights over the iPhone until at least 2012, and with all of the network's problems -- mostly related to its tendency to drop calls -- many are justifiably wary of purchasing a phone tied to a problematic network. But the latest jailbreak gives users access to T-Mobile's GSM network, which works overseas and may be more robust in your area.

Cool Jailbroken iPhone Apps

Apple's legit App Store has many cool offerings, but jailbroken iPhones have a wide array of banned creative and quirky apps. Access to Cydia -- the hub of "illegitimate" apps -- is a huge motivation for jailbreaking your iPhone. There are many lists of great jailbreak apps to check out -- here are a few standouts:

  • MyWi: Turns phones into mobile hotspots
  • Intelliscreen: Puts e-mail and calendars on the home screen
  • MxTube: Download YouTube videos onto your phone for offline viewing
  • My3G: Allows for previously Wi-Fi-only processes to run on 3G, like HD YouTube videos
  • PDANet: Share Internet connection

Fast and Easy

One of the best parts about jailbreakme is how quick and easy it is to open up your iPhone. No need to download software onto your desktop or hunt for updates that dodge jailbreak-killing iTunes updates -- by using the Web browser, the whole process takes less than a few minutes over a Wi-Fi connection. Still, you can expect Apple to release a patch that will shut jailbreakme down at least temporarily.

Fully Reversible

If you're scared of the consequences of jailbreaking your iPhone -- or simply don't like the experience -- jailbreakme is fully reversible. According to jailbreakme.com, "If you ever decide that you want to remove your jailbreak, just connect your device to your computer, sync, and then press Restore in iTunes." Beware: if you upgrade past iOS version 4.0.1, there may be some unknown outcomes.

FaceTime Video Chat over 3G

FaceTime video chat is a nifty new feature of the iPhone 4, but it only works over a Wi-Fi network, which may be difficult to find in many situations. Jailbreaking the iPhone 4 allows for FaceTime video chat over a 3G connection. The results are less-than-pretty, but it's more convenient and won't be interrupted if you have a good signal or walk out of Wi-Fi range.

Access to forbidden apps and services: The App Stort has a remarkable collection of apps and Apple's slogan, "There's an app for that," is close to the mark. But it's not entirely true. There are things Apple won't let you do with your iPhone via apps sold at the App Store.

For example, although Steve Jobs can project every element of the iPhone's interface on a big screen, you can't. Video output on the iPhone is limited, by default, to select apps. This can be done, however, with a third-party app found via the Cydia app. (Cydia is an application installed when you jailbreak your iOS device that provides access to third-party applications not submitted to/approved by Apple).

Or this: AT&T charges $20 a month for wired tethering--using your iPhone as a modem for your attached computer. For that $20 a month, AT&T provides no extra data, it's simply granting you the privilege to use the iPhone in this way. Cydia offers a handful of apps that provide this functionality for no additional charge.

Jailbreaking also lets you customize the iPhone's interface in ways not allowed by Apple. You can, for example, apply themes that change the iPhone's wallpaper as well as its icons. You can also enable video recording on older phones like the iPhone 3G that don't natively support it. And, with the installation of SSH, you have the ability to access every part of the iPhone--as you can with your Mac--rather than just those specific areas allowed by Apple.

My iPhone does everything I want too except making reliable phone calls. I blame most of that on AT&T's feeble network. It will be interesting to see how they play on the Verizon network.

actually you can blame that one on apple. they messed up the formula that shows signal strength so it displays two bars higher than it should. i have yet to find a spot where i lose service with my captivate and my gf loses service all the time on her 4g. the phone is an awesome device as long as you dont use it as a phone.

I'm not sure what all that says.

If I jailbreak it, does syncing it mess anything up? I have all my business contacts and emails on my phone and I need to sync my calendar and contacts just about everyday. Will it mess any of that up?

If you restore, what does that do? Never done it. Do I lose the apps, or what does the original settings include? Oh, bite me.

My phone part works great. I'm in Memphis though, except in my kids school, fine outside, but inside one of the gyms and you get no service, everywhere else yes. It's weird ,something in the walls or something.

They updated that already GGP. Mine still drops calls in three places every time I come to work or go home. I drive down hwy 100 and Vaughn Rd.

When I go into my local YMCA i lose signal. When I go into any target I lose signal unless by the front wall. Walmart I have signal fine.

This is soo last months news.....

allen with the failboat post...like most of his. And for your info, jailbreaking doesn't unlock it for other carriers, that's a different process.

I don't have an iPhone 4. I have a 3GS. Our entire company switched to AT&T. We were on Verizon for years. So now, we have to reconnect 2 or 3 times to complete calls that used to be totally reliable. That's not a meter problem... It's AT&T.

Nobody has perfect coverage because of the way cell networks are built. AT&T is just really sparse compared to Verizon. The iphone is my favorite phone so far (been using smart phones and Blackberry's for years), but the experience is tainted when you have to stand out in the rain to get a connection.

I would have thought ATT's coverage would be great in Nashville. There are spots here in Memphis, but for the most part, no problem anywhere in the metro area. I do know the spots around me though. I rarely drop calls and I don't think I have dropped any on my iPhone 3gs. My buddy's older one would drop calls. He has the new one, not sure if he is still or not. His house gets bad coverage, but it does get some.

Indeed. I have ATT, no iPhone though. I drop calls at my house, on my couch, in the middle of Memphis. I'm having issues with text messages that fail to send as well, but that mostly happens out on the Island at work. Both of these issues have happened with two different phones. It's definitely not the phone, regardless of what ATT tries to tell you.

Everywhere else seems ok though. Very odd. Even out in BFE.

They don't have great coverage anywhere unless you happen to be close to one of their towers. My office is on Music Row, and I can't even use the phone at my desk. Sucks at my house too, and I'm in a densely populated area. AT&T just sucks in general, and has chosen to spend money lying about it on TV instead of fixing it.

Advertising the jailbreak as making your phone compatible with T-Mobile's network is hardly a temptation. The only major carrier with a network crappier than AT&T is... T-Mobile.

Yep. I tried to give T-Mobile a chance. I really really did. :shake:

Verizon is the best. I understand Apple has already bought some of the chippage to make the iPhone work on their network. So, an iPhone that works as a phone will happen sometime in the future.

I had verizon and was very pleased with them. But i wanted and iphone and switched to ATT. But if Iphone goes back to verizon, i would go back to verizon in a heart beat. Let's hope that in 2012, the iphone comes to verizon.

On another note, anyone have done this jail break?

like it? hate it?
