What's a good gun range in Nashville area?

Really? According to Google Maps, it's about an hour and a half. I can be at SRHEC from Bellevue in 45 min. Is Google THAT far off?

Danariel, if you're also looking for a shotgun range, the Tennesse Clay Target Complex is really good. It's located off Briley Pkwy on the west side of town near the prisons. They have a nice sporting clays setup, plus trap and skeet. I've never shot those 2 and I can never keep the difference between those two straight. Their sporting clays are scattered along a paved road that winds through some fields and tree lines. There are lots of different stations set up with 2 clay launchers that give different angles and elevations at each station. It used to be "pay for what you shoot". Now it looks like a set fee of $40 for 100 clays, or $9 for 25 trap/skeet. They took some heavy flooding in May, but the last time I drove by it looked liked they were back in business. http://www.nashvillegunclub.com/

It takes me about an hour to get there. Well worth it for not having to wait and not having to go through the check shed at Stones River. Its much easier to unload three rifles and my range bag when I can pull up directly behind the firing line.

Uselton's is one of the nicest I've been to, never have to wait. I was a member there for a year, but it just got too expensive for me to shoot as much as I was.

Plus no reloads, very restrictive caliber list and on and on...

I try to support local vendors but the amount of money I spent there in one year was ridiculous. I joined at Owl Hollow and G&L and still have money left over for a class or 2...

I hear ya, they had just opened up, and it was 5 minutes from my house and 1 minute from where I used to work so I'd go almost everyday during lunch. So I started adding up how much ammo I was going through....bad idea. I couldn't renew.

Never had an issue w/ Rick. His staff was also really great to deal with, but it just wasn't economical...

The Academy of Self Protection, Inc at 7236 Whites Creek Pike, in Joelton. It's right off Interstate 24 at Exit 35. They have a decent indoor range for $12, all day ( Military, LE, Security - $8 ). They have a regular Gun Shop and a full schedule of classes. No Range fee for women on Fridays. You control your target and can change the distance as you see fit.

And it looks like that package is for up to 3 shooters, so $500/year each isn't so bad. Then you just overpay on your obligatory single box of range ammo each visit.

I don't know, I'd have to be in there ALOT for that to make any kind of sense then when you factor in the cost of overpriced ammo any sense of feeling economical just goes right out the window.

I'll keep giving my business to Charlie at CHMR. He's a great guy and I like shooting outdoors better anyway. I'd be willing to bet he'd take that same $500 it would cost one person for one year at Useltons and sell ten year long memberships for it. Plus he doesn't care if you want to pick up your brass or not and reloads are A-OK over there.

I may get a membership at Nashville Armory when it opens, apparently they are going to rent FA weapons and members get free gun rentals so it may be worth the money to have a place like that to bring out of state friends into.

I had a membership at On Target for several years, let that expire, and doubt I'll go back. Range is decent enough, just not happy with the people. YMMV.

I'm currently a member at Guns and Leather, typically shoot at Hendo, but I'm not shy about visiting Daniel and Nick up in Greenbriar either. Great range, great people, but yes, on the weekends, Greenbriar is a "little busy"

Recently, I also shoot at "The Gun Room" in Lebanon. Fantastic people, awesome range, small but very nice shop. I sort of have a dog in that fight, so I will have to claim some bias here...

For a gunsmith, I like Jeff at G&L and Tim Calhoun in Kingston Springs.

I need to get out to Charlie's place. OT was the only indoor range that would let me shoot my AR's, but with the comps, NO ONE enjoyed it.

I shoot at CMHR about three or four times a month. Charlie has a pistol pit where you can walk up as close as you want to the target. You will have to wait your turn or shoot with someone at the same distance they are.

The main range is roughly divided into thirds. Six lines of 50 and 100 yard targets, a middle section with 25 and 50 yard targets, and the last third has 12, 25 and 50 yard targets.

It can get crowded on Saturdays, Sunday afternoon usually has at least one or two lanes open in each section every time I have been there. The few times I have been there on weekdays I have almost had the range to myself.

Fees are $60 a year including spouse or significant other and $5 for guests. I often see full family's shooting on the weekends.

To me it worth the drive.

This is true. However, women still shoot free and guests accompanying a member shoot for $5. My father-in-law gets a membership each year. Only thing to be aware of at Charlie's is there is only one pistol pit with around 4 lanes on the lower range, and for about the past year the upper pistol range which is much larger is dominated by permit classes every weekend the range is open. At least, that's been our experience the past year.

It's still a good place to go shoot and Charlie is a super nice guy.

I delivered a pallet of ammo out there at the Gun Room once. Have to agree they were some real nice folks to deal with and they have a nice looking store/range. Haven't been out that way on my off days to shoot yet but I plan to go some time.

I haven't, but after reading this message thread, I thought I'd try to find somewhere with less hassle, and an RSO w/o a god complex. But thanks for mentioning it. I think I remember a mention of a range, of sorts, in Viola. I need to investigate that further.

I can't justify or even attempt to defend some of the actions of ALL the RO's a those places, but the one thing I CAN say is they have to deal with a ton of A$$hats and "Know-it-alls" mixed in with the average knowledgable shooter, just like the folks that work at gun shops. They can't weed the good from the bad after a cursory glance, so they have to assume most people are going to do wrong. Much better to play those odds then assume everyone will do right. Being too strict lowers the possibility of negligence. Being too lax gets someone hurt. Eventually, the shift in demeanor will happen to even the most patient and understanding person on the planet.

I'd take the strict limiting of behaviour to the non-existant oversight and "free-for-all" attitude I've seen at a couple of the indoor ranges.

That being said, I will not shoot at the state ranges. I'm lucky enough to access to land to shoot on, and I shoot at a couple of great indoor ranges that have "safety" as the top priority instead of how many people they can line up in a row for lane time.

LOL I think I know who they are talking about. She might have been over at the pistol range when I was there.

If it's who I think it is, maybe they are exaggerating a bit. She's definitely overbearing but not bad enough to keep me from going back out there.
