I've known the Lyle guy for probably 15 years. I never heard him called anything other than "William" but with his father's sense of humor, I could see him naming him "Wilhelm".

What the story dos not say as that his folks are divorced and William got into trouble once before for stealing stereos out of cars.

His dad is one of those people who has no respect for authority and is so smart that he doesn't have any sense. I like him, but suspect few of his neighbors will give him the time of day.

Detectives Search For Clues

By BILL JONES

Staff Writer

Greeneville police are investigating a shooting Wednesday night off Austin Street that left one man dead and a second hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

Capt. Terry Webb, the GPD's chief detective, identified the man who died as Walter Lee Whinery, Jr., 22, of East Allens Bridge Road.

Whinery's body had been found lying on the ground by police in an alley off Austin Street behind Rogers Automotive Service.

Whinery was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rogers Automotive Service is located at 529 Tusculum Boulevard, but an alley that runs off Tusculum Boulevard is behind the business.

Police had gone to the alley office Austin Street, according to Capt. Webb, after the GPD received a telephone call at 11:38 p.m. from a sheriff's deputy who had been at Laughlin Memorial Hospital on an unrelated matter when a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his face arrived there.

A Greene County 911 spokesman said 911 was notified in a telephone call from Laughlin Memorial Hospital at 11:29 p.m. that a shooting victim might be located in the alley off Austin Street.

Wounded Man

Capt. Webb identified the wounded man who came to the hospital late Wednesday as Wilhelm Nelson D. Lyle, 23, of 1835 Old Stage Road, Chuckey.

Capt. Webb said Lyle had apparently driven himself to the hospital and told police that another shooting victim could be found in the alley off Austin Street.

Capt. Webb said he understood that Lyle was to be transferred to the Johnson City Medical Center for further treatment of a gunshot wound to his lower jaw.

Asked if police believed that only Lyle and Whinery had been involved in the shooting, Capt. Webb replied, "At this time as far as we know, but that could change."

He noted that two firearms had been recovered by police. One weapon, he said, had been found at the shooting scene, while a second had been located at a residence.

Asked if police had learned what might have motivated the shooting, Capt. Webb said he did not want to speculate on the motive before the investigation is completed.

No charges had been placed as of late this morning, Capt. Webb said.

GPD detectives, who had worked throughout the night on the case, returned to the scene after daybreak and began a second search of the crime scene for possible clues to the fatal shooting, officers said.

During that search after daybreak, detectives found several spent shell casings and at least one round of what appeared to be unfired ammunition from a semiautomatic pistol, according to a Greeneville Sun photographer who was on the scene.

The investigation was continuing late this morning, Capt. Webb said.
