U.S. To Train 3,000 Offshore IT Workers -- InformationWeek

Despite President Obama's pledge to retain more hi-tech jobs in the U.S., a federal agency run by a hand-picked Obama appointee has launched a $36 million program to train workers, including 3,000 specialists in IT and related functions, in South Asia.

Following their training, the tech workers will be placed with outsourcing vendors in the region that provide offshore IT and business services to American companies looking to take advantage of the Asian subcontinent's low labor costs.

Under director Rajiv Shah, the United States Agency for International Development will partner with private outsourcers in Sri Lanka to teach workers there advanced IT skills like Enterprise Java (Java EE) programming, as well as skills in business process outsourcing and call center support. USAID will also help the trainees brush up on their English language proficiency.

Outsourcing a jobs is worst thing for most of people in U.S.

A lot of people are tolerating it just because they not directly effected

Sadly just look at new jeep commercial . They had to use black and white movies showing Americans working hard . Than they said that we can build again and new jeep is prove of that.

On the other hand why complaining about it. It is free market .

Supposed to fix it self or something .

This isn’t a Union issue; don’t try to turn in into one. How many IT or Tech guys do you know that are union?

The consumer decides where the jobs will be. Buy stuff made here and the jobs stay here. Buy stuff made in other county’s to take advantage of the cheap labor rates and the jobs will go there.

It happened before Obama its happening during and it will happen after.

I work in manufacturing, was an Applications Engineer for a machine tool company, have travelled extensively to businesses all across this country, have seen many company’s come and go, and I have never heard anyone in a company that was leaving say it was over taxes. Can you please explain where you are coming from on this?

The union stuff is just

I am not pro union but I hate to see it thrown out (as it always is) in discussions about our economy.

It is generally being used by someone that is trying to make an excuse for turning his back on his country.

And no it’s not just Obama; years ago we had a big influx of Indians that were brought into this country to work in the technology fields because they would work for far less than Americans.

Many in this country are willing to sell out their country for a buck. We see it right here on this very forum from some that actually seem proud of doing it.

I'll take that as gospel from an applications engineer who has travelled

extensively? I think I'll take it from people like Thomas Sowell, Arthur

Laffer and that kind. They are economists and study the trends caused

by taxation, not to mention everything else that effects it.

Not to belittle what you have heard from the folks you met

with, while in your travels, DaveTN, but they might not know what the

front office really does. The front office is primarily concerned with

making a profit and they will do what is economically feasible.

Taxation effects everything and everyone from the CEO to the bottom

laborer.

You evidently haven't been paying too much to some of the headlines.

Andy Stern(SEIU) is one of Obama's top advisors for issues like this.

He isn't anything more than a union organizer, and will give up nothing

in order to see a company go straight to Hell, while paying every last

penny of benefits, on the way to bankruptcy. That happens to be the

model Obama and his ideologues are killing this country. One of his

economic advisers resigned just the other day, and I'll bet you it was

over the little communist union thugs setting the agenda. If taxation

doesn't rule the day in our country, why are dems and republicans

both talking about keeping the Bush tax cuts in the arena of ideas?

Because some of them are actually scared, either for their political

hides, or maybe they are scared they screwed the economy up and

we end up in a depression, because of their over-reach of current

legislation, which is top heavy in taxation.

I'm not as anti union as you might think I am. There is a time and a place

for them, just not to the extent that they are allowed to destroy any

kind of business. And, all you have to do is look at California to see the

wrath unions have been to municipalities.

Just saying a bunch of Indians were brought into this country to work

cheaper is naive. most of the Indian jobs were created overseas to

offset jobs lost in the USA. Any immigrant from India that came over here

to work was more than likely better educated than his American

counterpart.

If the tax code was applied with equity towards our true needs, and

not used to redistribute wealth from one class to another, our problems

would vanish, instead of creating and maintaining a lower class and feeding

them better food than we feed ourselves. It is called Capitalism. Get used

to it unless you like to address your dear president "My Lord".

Capitalism built this country into the strongest economic powerhouse in

the planet. It will again, when you decide to understand it.

I'm not so sure, but I think you may be questioning my patriotism with your

last remark. You are wasting your time. I won't bother to engage in that tripe.

The point being here, free market competition is good, but the Government has no business advancing the market position of certain companies using my tax dollars. Shoot we've got enough unemployed people here ready and willing to be trained as IT specialists, why the heck do I need to have my money sent to South Asia to train people who aren't even US citizens? At $36 million for 3,000 heads, it comes to $12,000 per South Asian trainee... you could get a pretty good chunk of education with that amount of money.
