Machinist Question

I have alot of end mill bits, calipers, and other tools that my father and grandfather had. A local gun shop has offered to trade me guns for the tools. I think he is low balling me on the tools. Can anyone help me with an idea of how much these items might be worth. I have probably over 500 bits and much more items. Thanks.

Everybody check my very last post. Thanks.

Inventory and photos with scale references (e.g. loose change works) would be necessary to give you any sort of estimate, but it's not uncommon for new end-mill bits to sell 2 to 50 (or more) dollars each. The bits alone may be worth several thousand dollars.

Depending on the condition of the end mills and size, they could be worth any thing from $2 up as 1010011010 stated. As for the other tools, you might get more selling them rather than trading them. The priceon these also depends on condition. If you could pm pics or e-mail pics to me, I might take some of them.

Calipers. If anyone wants these tools make me an offer for all. I still have more tools that are not photographed and prob over 1000 blanks for tools. I would really like to see someone be able to use these. DSCN1901.jpg

Does any one want the bits I have been offered $575.00 shipped for just the bits. A complete picture of the bits are at complete tool set pictures by ffmedic245 - Photobucket There are no duplicate pictures in this album. I prefer to be able to deliver them or you can pick them up. If you want them please contact me. I am off for the next 2 days and can deliver them or meet you somewhere. Thanks again.

Hi Para

Dunno the price the used bits "ought to" bring, but am pretty sure that new-price would be a LOT more than $575.

I don't have a big ole milling machine or lathe that those would fit on. And currently no room to setup full-sized machines even if I had em.

Did your dad and gramps leave the big ole machinery too?

If the tooling doesn't sell off easy, something to think about-- Even if you are not interested in machining now, no telling what you might think in a decade or three. I'm real thumb-fingered and only got interested in wood and metal a few years ago. Got no talent and will never be good at it. But even the small hobby machines are pretty expensive, and even an unskilled person can get more done on real tools rather than toys. Just sayin-- If there's any chance you might get interested later, you will pay thru the nose later on to match the set you already own.

From what I hear, the tool market is distorted in strange ways lately. Especially up north, so many machine shops have gone out of biz that its not worth trying to sell off really nice multi-ton lathes and milling machines, and people can get em free if they will tote em off. But you need a place to put the machines, somebody with a fork lift to tote em, etc.

Also, CNC is taking over, reducing the market value of non-automated machines. But the non-automated machines are very capable and a lot of fun.

Hope it doesn't sound "preachy". Just sayin...

Looks like you've got a lot of tools a hobby machinist would like to have. The various drills and end mills all appear to be high speed steel, which is good for hobby use but not very durable for industrial use. The micrometers, dial indicators, and 1-2-3 blocks are probably the most valueable, assuming they're accurate. You'd need a set of gauge blocks or pins to verify calibration on those. Some time spent surfing around Industrial Equipment - Browse the Big Book online at MSCDirect.com might help give you an idea of the value. Else having an experienced machinist look through your stuff would help.

Ebay is a good solution, group the items into small-ish lots for sale.

I'd like the micrometer set, but have not the foggiest idea what they are worth.

From the picture they look like old tools, perhaps USA or European just because that is who used to make em. Depending on the brand and such, perhaps they would have collector value.

On the other hand, you can buy a Chinese micrometer set that looks like those for maybe $100. And you can buy a new USA set for maybe $1000 or more. Was looking at prices a year ago and forget the specifics. If those things were built high quality and not abused, they don't go bad with age as far as I know.
