boning

anybody ever take a gander at boning there own leather?I just bought a unboned galco holster for $25.00 http://www.opticsplanet.net/galco-c3h-shoulder-holster-component-kimber-3-1911-c212.htmland figured for less then half the price i could give it a try,and if i fail miserably i wouldnt be out much

anybody ever try this and have any tips,or wanna tell me how bad it will turn out?

I am quite displeased with what this thread is actually about. Got my hopes up. Can't say that I've ever boned leather. Not even quite sure what that means.

Boning leather is the act of form-fitting it to an object, in this case your pistol. I have no experience doing so.

Just make sure your holster is over 18.

I bent the front sight on a Ruger Black Hawk revolver years ago forming a holster to that pistol. Amazing what force leather can apply when drying.

If I were to ever do that again I would somehow come up with a wood template pistol and let the leather set over that before I ever let my firearm do the actual forming. (by the way, if you actually do use your pistol, wrap it tightly in saran wrap...they rust ya know)

I admit I am out of touch with lots of American Society, I work nights, I don't watch the big 3 news casts and if I do watch TV its sports or Discovery or the Military channel with spatterings of Sci Fi or NASA network. What gives!?

I have form fitted many holsters. Never had a problem. Just put the pistol in a plastic bag to prevent rusting.

It is easy.

1. If you want to add extra sight clearance, rubber band a appropriate piece of wood to your gun.

2.Wrap your gun in a couple of layers of saran wrap.

3. Get the holster really wet and plyable.

4. insert gun in holster and mold holster to your firearm using fingers and a leather spoon or dowel that has been rounded off on the end.

5. once you get it close to where you want it use spring clamps to mold ir really tight to the gun.

6. Allow to dry in a warm dry place but not in direct sun light.

7. After it has dried it will be a bit tight , but will loosen up slightly in time.
