Chicago gun update

(CNN) -- The Chicago, Illinois, City Council in a 45-0 vote approved a new gun ordinance Friday, four days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the city's 28-year-old strict ban on handgun ownership was unconstitutional.

Among other details, the ordinance allows only one operable firearm per household, meaning all other guns would need to have gun locks or be in locked cases. It also requires owners to have a state firearms permit, to register weapons with Chicago police and to take four hours of classroom training and one hour of firing range training.

The plan also bans assault weapons and gun shops in the city.

The June 28 Supreme Court ruling overturned the city's previous handgun ban.

"Although the ruling wasn't what we had hoped for, it was what we expected," said Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. "That's why for the last several months we've been preparing the reasonable and responsible ordinance to regulate handguns in the home that the council approved today. ...

"Either we enact new and reasonable handgun laws in Chicago to protect our residents -- as the council has done -- or we do nothing and risk greater gun violence in our streets and in our homes," he said.

A 5-4 conservative majority of justices on Monday reiterated its 2-year-old conclusion that the Constitution gives individuals equal or greater power than states on the issue of possession of certain firearms for self-protection.

"It cannot be doubted that the right to bear arms was regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as states legislated in an evenhanded manner," wrote Justice Samuel Alito.

The court grounded that right in the due process section of the 14th Amendment. The justices, however, said local jurisdictions still retain the flexibility to preserve some "reasonable" gun-control measures currently in place nationwide.

Next, need a Husband and wife to both claim they should both be allowed a weapon for home defense.

Why should home defense be limited to 1 person?

No one limits home invasion to 1 person.

We need to send <!-- title / author block -->

Kwik to Chicago.

there is no way that law will stand if tested in court. it goes way beyond reasonable measures. I doubt that is reasonable to much of anyone.

You sir, are a genius.

+1, I believe the moment he sets foot into the city he'd be arrested for just being there.

Seriously, I don't how many here are married but I am considering my wife and myself. Each of us of should have access to what ever guns we can get our hands on in our own home if needed. I like that about TN and it should be that way any place.

Serious, if we lived in Chicago, why should only one of us have a chance to protect both of us? What are those people smoking up there?

I find it intresting that they don't allow gun stores in the city. If it is that hard to get and own a gun, what is the harm in having a gun store in the city. 45-0, that is just plain sad. Everyone who can legally own a gun should be allowed to have one on them when they are in their house.

Hence why I won't travel to Illinois and won't do business with any company in Illinois. I'm not boycotting AZ, I'm boycotting any state that restricts thier citizen's gun rights.

The people in Illinois are just like the people in Tennessee; they want to be able to carry guns. They are fighting for carry privileges like Tennessee has.

Does anyone here think that Memphis reflects the rest of Tennessee? No, it’s one of the dirtiest most dangerous cities in the nation. Chicago doesn’t reflect the rest of Illinois either.

So your idea is to not do business with companies that have nothing to do with gun rights, but happen to be in states that restrict citizen’s gun rights? You won’t be doing any business in Tennessee then because being a citizen in Tennessee gives you no right to carry a gun; it’s a crime.

You also won’t be buying many guns, because most gun manufactures are in states that don’t recognize 2nd amendment rights.

Certainly you won't be buying anything from that little company in Genesco, Ill.

Forgot the name ... oh yeah, Springfield.

Another little startup there too, Armalite.

I won't get caught up in boycotting. As long as the locals have a chance at who or what they vote for, they are getting what they want. I truly believe in local rule and state rights. State meaning the residents , of course gov't has no rights.

Or Smith & Wesson in Massachusetts .

Many pro gun companies and people are in states that don’t recognize the 2nd. But I can’t for the life of me see how boycotting them can help.

Tennessee isn’t going to win any awards for acknowledging the right to bear arms either.

Correct, the people of the City of Chicago have what they want. The politicians are elected by voters that want to lie at home and watch Oprah while getting a government check. Oprah tells them guns are bad and that outlawing guns may save their babies from being killed while they are jacking the local liquor store.

Midstate and downstate Illinois are good people just like here in Tennessee. Let’s hope Memphis doesn’t end up causing the kind of problems (Gun Laws) for Tennessee that Chicago causes for Illinois.

As a person that will be unfortunately moving back to the great state of Illinois (family issues, no further comment will be given, and no snide remarks will be tolerated by me), I would hope that people hwer would continue to do business with great companies like Springfield, DSA, Rock River, Armalite, and any other company that finds itslef in that unfortunate State. I would also argue that it's quite likely that the people of Chicago truy DO NOT have a say in whom they elect, as it is arguably the most corrupt city in the US. How else would a guy that's been linked to more insider BS than John Gotti be in offices still?

Dane479, carry on the good fight in IL, they need another good voter but we hate to lose you here as we are also on the edge it seems.

These local Dem-o-craps aka, socialists, marxists, and other malcontents will do as they please no matter what the law states.

It will be challanged in court. But that is their plan. Tie it up in the courts, waste tax payers money and get their leftist agenda through.

As their hero Saul Alyinsky said "the ends justifies the means". These "ststists" are using our legal system againt us.

And this is BULL :poop::poop::poop::poop::poop:

Can we cut off Memphis and give it to another state?

People are already leaving Shelby County in droves. A.C. Warton would be an idiot to start up anything like this. While he is in MAIG, btw...I don't think he's truly that stupid.

Boycotting might sound good at first glance, but usually either doesn't impact the right people, or impacts the wrong people. Choosing a Glock over an XD probably won't mean anything to the typical Chicago crook politician. And, as we saw with the boycott of Arizona Ice Tea (brewed in New York!) over the immigration thing, sometimes it's just plain dumb.

It was Chicago style politics that gave us Barfbag Ohammy as president. One problem is that Chicago politics has been run by and for the mob for so long that there is literally no one who can get elected there without mob ties. There is even an alderman in the city of Chicago who actually worked for Al Capone, (no bull, look it up). The vast majority of the people in Chicago are just like the rest of us, they want their civil rights. The Daly machine is so powerful that it is nearly impossible to get him and his cronies out. There hasn't been a legitimate election in Chicago in over 100 years. Now the REAL problem is this...There are so many powerful state representatives in and around the city of Chicago that they can actually out vote the entire rest of the state. I have believed for some time now that Illinois should do what Missouri did when they got the right to carry. That is put it on the ballot for the entire state (that is the people not elected officials) to vote on. If they did that, there are enough pro gun people throughout the state to get this thing passed. There are enough people in Chicago in combination with the people from the rest of the state to pass it easily.

The idea of boycotting something is to direct a change

in behavior. Like DaveTN said, it wouldn't change

anything, but hurt the people of IL. And Geneseo, IL

is branded on some good stuff we like. The people

of IL need to boycott the Daley machine before it gets

better. MacDonald did that, and that's a start.

 If there is a law against owning a handgun in the city of Chicago then that means there are no crimes committed in Chicago that revolve around handgun use. You guys just don't get it. Due to the handgun law in Chicago, it must be one of the most crime free cities in the nation. The Chicago city council are a bunch of freaking geniuses. Why hasn't every city adopted their lead?
