My wife and I were talking about "back in the day" just recently. So far this summer, there have been several people without A/C units (or without their units on) in Shelby County that have died "due to the heat" (as the media puts it). So, "back in the day", were folks just keeling over right and left?

I PM'd "oldfella" to answer your query.

You can't miss what you don't have. I remember that we just kept the windows and doors open all the time. The screens kept the skeeters and flys out. When you were outdoors you got on the porch or under a tree when you were not working the crops. All was well. I would think that all Tennesseans lived like this at some point if you are over 30.

My house, growing up, had AC, the summers, I spent a lot of time out in the country with my grandfather. They had "A" window unit. We dealt with the heat. However, as a kid, the heat didn't bother me as much. My mom, who grew up in that house, never had heat, picked cotton by hand (even got out of school for it), will not stay if it is hot. She keeps her thermostat between 68 and 64. She told me that I was crazy, she would have been at a hotel, or somewhere, but not there last night!

We just got used to it; spent most of the time outside the house, skinny-dipping in the nearby creek or under some palm trees drinking coconut juice cursing at the heat, like now.

While nowhere near as miserable as having my A/C go out, my primary desktop computer at home -- the one that I do 90% of my web design work on -- gave up the ghost on Sunday and I've been waiting for new parts to build an upgraded system since. Needless to say it hasn't been cheap and wasn't something I wanted to be spending my money on right now, but it was absolutely essential in order for me to keep doing what I do.

Thankfully I have daily backups of my essential data, plus I keep my OS/Apps on a separate drive from my data, so I'm really not losing anything other than time. But time is the one thing I have very little of lately.

Just wanted to gripe a little.

People just weren't as fat and unaccustomed to hard work and harsh conditions back then as we are now.

Yep.

And they had enough sense to go find a creek, pond, lake, river, to keep cool when it gets this hot instead of sweating in front of the TV.

And they didn't have the urban jungle that retains so much heat. While it was just as hot during the day, it cooled off more at night.

Went by the house to check on the dog and my thermostat said it was 87 degrees!! The dog was fine, not even panting. I have him an extra bowl of water and fans on where he is. He has a ceiling fan, a fan blowing across the kitchen floor another one at his food and water, and one more across the dining area. So he is good to go. Went to Walmarts to buy some Mobile 1 for my oil change this weekend and was out in Shelby Farms, my Jeep's temp gauge showed 108! That is driving around temp, not going out and jumping into it and it higher than real temperature reading.

We have been going door to door checking on people to make sure they have air. It is hotter than the devils underware out there. If you don't they have this number to call: CITY OF MEMPHIS HEAT HOTLINE:636-2688

They are only open till 8pm though, so I guess from 8pm till 8am you are screwed.

I guess you can call 911 and we can hose you down though!

(Only call though if your a hot stripper)

We are good shape compared to most. We have great friends and relatives, we have been offered places to stay from 4 or 5 different people, offered 3 window units, and enough fans for each of us to have 2 personal fans to drag around. This is no exaggeration. We are blessed with family and friends. Hmm, maybe if they would all pony up, I wouldn't have to buy the A/C myself...Muahhahahaha..no wait, that's not right!

Oh, and I can strip......and I will be hot.....but not maybe "hot" as you are referring too!

Here you go

Not to knock your AC friend, but want to just add, the compressor can act like it is bad when the internal thermal overload trips. It can take hours for it to cool enough for it to reset. However, If you trust him, then if he says its the compressor it probably is. I do maintenance work including industrial and commercial refrigeration and will help some of the companies customers for their bussiness and personal residences when I have time. Just 2 months ago, I got a call for help at one of these and only had to replace the capacitor. The AC company that first looked at it said "New unit, $4,000." , The next door neibor was getting a new unit, and they asked that AC company, they said "New compressor, $2,500.", I came by "Capacitor $40." Now mind you, that was for the condensor fan motor, the compressor overheated and tripped said internal switch. I didn't even have to test the compressor it was running. It overheated because the fan wasnt even turning. Replaced, checked everything over and left. By the way this capacitor runs less than $5. The kicker to this story, They had a bad electrical surge the other day, AC unit doing same as before( I have seen this, surges can damage capacitors.) I couldn't get there for a week so they called someone else in, they tried the new fan approach till they explained what i told them. He then tried to expalin I tried to ruin there unit with the wrong part for future job (i.e. fix it just enough to break soon, that happens a lot). No dice, they now me better than that, and I don't do this for profit. I mostly charge mileage and no markup on parts. I've even traded for meals and such. He gave up and replaced the capacitor, $200.That may sound high I do not know, but they charged $75 for the capacitor, Watch who you use!!!!

EVERYONE LISTEN TO Nozzle13! CHECK ON YOUR NEIGHBORS! Particularly the Elderly. The heat indexes hitting the temps they are - can kill quickly indeed.

Check your pets, too. No leaving of pets in a vehicle.

For your vehicle, leave a window down a bit. With this level of heat and humidity, it is possible for the heat in a vehicle rise to the level where windows can crack (not due to the window, but due to what is holding it in place expanding.)

It was off for an hour or so before he got there. He checked the capacitor while off, while running, and with the master fuse pulled. He did some other stuff too. I just can't tell you what. I do trust him. He is one of my long term friends, I trust him with my life as back up or me backing him up kind of friend. We compare gun collections. He is winning, but my AR is nicer!
