OK. Now I'm the one that needs to chill.

2002 GMC 1500 truck's A/C was kinda cool driving out at 4PM today. Made some stops an hour later and it started going warm/hot. I noticed weeks before that sometimes it would go warm for a little bit and then start cooling after some turns. This time when it was totally hot, I had to pass somebody. I stomped on it and it went cold really fast and stayed cold for 30 minutes until I got home. It's like the tilting of the gases or fluids went from one section to another and dislodged to make everything work equally again. All I can think of is a low level of 134A. Ideas?

my HVAC guy and my mechanic agree with your low gas assumption. (same guy, he kinda knows it all and a partridge in a pear tree)

Get him to put the gauges on it. Probably is low. This kind of heat will make it show up.

If it's too low you can ruin a clutch a lot quicker by the cycling.

I just replaced a condenser, compressor, orifice tube and drier on my Taurus. The radiator fans

quit and cooked the lubricant, clogging the condenser. Never been cooler.

If your vehicle has electric fans on it, and they fail, you have been warned:D

Low refrigerant or clogged expansion valve. Both pretty inexpensive if you get someone who knows what they're doing.

Your freon is not low.

If your ac only blows cold while your moving then you probably have an air flow problem or bad ac clutch.

Clean out around your radiator and condenser cores, your evaporator box and check fans.

If it was the actual stepping on the gas that makes it cool (higher engine RPMs) then your clutch is giving out.

Really, A LOT of ac problems are really, really, really simple. Freon is not always needed and should be one of the last options

Low refrigerant or clogged expansion valve.
GM doesn't use expansion valves. They use orifice tubes. If the orifice tube is clogged then you'll have a problem elsewhere like a compressor going out or improper oil. Edited by strickj

Just went to start the truck, but it won't! I knew cold weather taxed batteries, but heat, too?

Replaced the battery tonight. The old one lasted over 4 years, which is about the most I ever get out of them. (Y'all don't have to start up a pissing contest on how long YOUR batteries last you!)

:)Built to last! DURALAST! :tough:

Also, when Granny picked me up, her car said it was 98 outside. When we got to the interstate, the traffic of so many engines (I suppose coupled with more pavement) sent the gauge to 108, and when we got off the road it registered a toasty 98 again.

The whole time in the car with the A/C on max, you really couldn't tell it was any better than 70 in her Caddy. Suh ... ucked.
