I was on another forum discussing the new TN legislation regarding carrying a firearm in a restaurant that serves alcohol.

One question/response has me puzzled and I wanted some help before I try to answer it.

This person is from Alabama and wrote:

"Maybe you all can educate me on what's involved in the process but when I submitted my paperwork for my concealed carry license here, TN didn't honor an Alabama license. When I picked it up today I found that TN now accepts it and Louisiana, although not on the list on the back, now honors it as well. Is this part of the legislation you mention?"

From what I understand, this particular legislation has nothing to do with reciprocity among other states, so I'm not sure how to respond to his inquiry. I thought TN recognized all other states permits????

Tennessee used to not accept Alabama carry permits because in Alabama, they do not have to do a background check. But Tennessee changed it's practice several years ago.

It does not have anything to do with reciprocity, this bill would allow a citizen with a Tenn. HCP to be able to carry a handgun legally into a place that serves alcohol.

Tennessee does not honor all states permits and not all states honor Tn. permits. For a list of states that honor Tn. permits and permits that Tn. honor go here.

Tn did not honor AL when I lived in AL. The law that you mention (TN honors all states) was not in effect until 2002 (maybe 03) as I recall.

I lived in Decatur from 86 thr 2000 working out of Red Stone. We would still be there but my mother in law needed us to take care of her so in 2000 we moved back home.
