Michelle Obama Asks Me to Sign President Obama’s Birthday Card

Jim Lindgren • July 27, 2010 10:38 pm

I received the following email from First Lady Michelle Obama:

SUBJECT: Will you sign Barack’s birthday card, James?

James –

Every year, our family tries to come up with a fun way to wish Barack a happy birthday.

And this August 4th, when he turns 49, I have something new in mind.

This has been a big — and hectic — year for him. After signing the Affordable Care Act and Wall Street reform into law — and completing his first year as president — I think it’s safe to say we will remember it for a long time.

And I know full well how much he credits this movement, and the work of supporters like you, for the change that we’ve accomplished.

So I’m putting together a birthday card that I would like you to sign. Together with other Organizing for America supporters — and me, Malia, Sasha, and Bo — we’ll wish him a happy birthday and let him know that we’re ready to take on the year ahead alongside him.

Will you
?

This year also brought a lot of surprises — some good and some bad.

Supporters like you have helped him make the best of it — by contacting Congress to help push stalled legislation forward, by re-engaging supporters in the political process, by giving back with service projects across the country, and so much more.

And while we can’t know what the coming year will bring, all of us, working together, will continue pushing forward for change.

Will you help make this a memorable birthday for Barack and wish him a happy 49th?

Thanks so much,

Michelle Obama

I find it hard to say precisely why I find this email a bit creepy. At one level this seems innocuous enough–and it is definitely not a big thing.

At another level, asking millions of Americans to sign a birthday card for the President suggests a tone-deafness about the cult of personality. If we lived in a dictatorship, getting millions of subjects to celebrate the Dear Leader’s birthday would be routine, but in a free republic this appeal to get millions of citizens to celebrate a current president’s birthday strikes a discordant note to my ear.

No, I am not saying we are in a dictatorship; I am saying that because we are not, we should not be emulating the trappings characteristic of that fundamentally different sort of regime. Nor do I think this is particularly ominous, just a very small step in the wrong direction.

Last, it seems strange for Michelle Obama to be trying to get us to sign Barack’s birthday card when she is scheduled to be in Spain with [at least one of] her daughters during the President’s birthday.

;)

I guess when you believfe you have the number one brand you can send out stupid email requests..

If that email was to me, the main thing I would be pissed about right from the beginning is how many times she called me an Obama supporter.

Either way though, I suppose we should all sign his birthday card. If not they will call us racists.

It seems a little creepy to me. Maybe because BHO got himself elected with a lot of cult of personality.

On the other hand, I made the mistake of sending some money to the RNC in past years, and got similar stuff from the RNC with full-color 8X10 glossies (and bigger) of GWB. Even after GWB left office, asking for donations to the GWB presidential library. Just because I sent a few bucks to the RNC doesn't mean I had any particular affection for GWB.

But in that case it seemed more dumb or cheezy, rather than cult of personality. GWB didn't get elected by being a silver-tongued devil, thats fer sure. Am still not certain HOW GWB got elected, except maybe people saw him as the lesser of evils compared to Al Gore or McCain or Kerry. Out of 300 million USA citizens, seems we could have scraped up somebody more qualified than any of those jokers.

The US political process stopped being about qualifications long ago.

By the time candidates becomes electable, they are no longer fit to serve, even in the unlikely event they initially were.

"A man who refuses to be involved in politics must accept being ruled by his inferiors"

Think it was Plato who said that. Sums up politicians pretty well, the people we need are the ones who won't touch politics.

That's because the ones who are fit to serve realize that the phrase "career politician" is an abomination. Or is it Obamanation?

If I thought he would actually read my brithday wishes to him I would sign it, but he will never read how much I dislike his politics and that I basically hate him.

My signing the card will just add to the numbers they will twist to show how many people love him.

**** the guy, I can't wait until he is out of office.

And I sure hope the Republicans pony up a good candidate for 2012, or its 4 more years of this crap.

You are right again Mike. He will use the cards for propaganda.

Michael Delgiorno spoke about this on the air one day this week and he said after he signed it the website sent him to paypal. He said you had to pay to send it. He also said his wife did not think much of his B-day because she went out of town.

True. The people who should be in there are the ones who are hesitant to go, but do so (and see it as) as a personal sacrifice. Washington (George) knew this and we need people who know it today. We don't need anyone who wants to be in Washington for 50 years, nor anyone who wants the title of 'king'. We need servants. People who will sacrifice a short period of their lives to serve others. No one should go to Washington and leave years later with millions more dollars than they showed up with.
