New Bill introduced proposing CCW in establishment serving liquor

Recommended Posts

Naifeh will vote if his vote is needed to stop this bill. If his vote makes no difference he will not. It's that simple. If he can stop it he will.

I agree that about sums it up. He won't bother if he doesn't have to, but will if he needs to. :)

You know something to really consider doing is to go to capitol hill as a group the day the bill is supposed to be heard to show support for it.

I have done this as part of another group on other legislation and seen it done by others. I will admit it doesn't always make a difference and can end up involving several trips, but it can't help but to make the committee members think a little when people take time from their day to come to Nashville to show support for a bill.

Let me say too, although I am the one to suggest it, I will admit I don't think I would be the one to try to organize such a thing or even if the bills sponsor would want such a thing.

What is Naifeh's political history as far as elections are concerned. Is he one of these pols who never gets any real opposition because he is entrenched in his office and no one can get any traction when running against him? Has he had any close calls in elections recently?

Quoted from Wikipedia

Naifeh is considered a master of parliamentary procedure and tactics, which is very important in that the Speaker of the House in Tennessee, unlike his national counterpart in Congress, generally personally presides over all sessions of the chamber. He is also regarded as being very partisan, particularly by his Republican opponents, who have long made him a "target" for defeat. In the most recent redistricting, much of the southern portion of Naifeh's native Tipton County, was removed from his district. Many suggest that this was because Memphis suburbanites, who are generally quite conservative and reliable Republican voters with no long-term ties to Tipton County, would vote to replace Naifeh with a conservative Republican. However, he easily defeated retired Air Force colonel Tony Lopez in 2002.

In December 2002, African American physician Dr. Jesse Cannon, a Republican and Naifeh's personal physician, announced that he would oppose Naifeh in 2004. Dr. Cannon counted heavily on support from outside the immediate region and was fairly successful raising campaign funds among affluent Republicans in the Nashville area. In an interesting dynamic to the race, the only other county in the district, added in the most recent redistricting, Haywood County, is Tennessee's only black-majority county. However, on November 2, 2004, Naifeh defeated Cannon rather handily, by a margin of approximately 58% - 42%. The Democratic majority in the Tennessee House was narrowed to 53-46 by the overall statewide outcome of this election. Shortly after the election some pundits suggested scenarios in which another Democrat considered to be less partisan, such as Frank Buck of Dowelltown in Middle Tennessee, could have been elected Speaker if he could get the unanimous support of the Republican minority and the help of a few dissident Democrats from the eastern two-thirds of the state. (From 1973 until January 2007, when state senator John S. Wilder was defeated in his reelection bid for the speakership of the state senate, both houses of the Tennessee General Assembly had been led by West Tennesseeans.) However, Republican party discipline was totally lacking, when the issue came to a vote (Buck declined to be nominated). Nine Republicans joined with all of the Democrats to reelect Naifeh. These Republican members were warned of the possibility, even the probability, of facing officially-party-endorsed opponents in the August 2006 primary election, should they choose to stand for another term.

58% of the vote in the last election.

Got a couple of emails back:

Paul Stanley, not the guy from kiss, but a Senator:

Thanks for your note. As a permit holder myself, I was honored to support this bill. I am not optimistic of the bills chances in the House. Having been in the House, I know the bill will be sent to a committee that usually kills it. However, there may be a slight chance it can get out and if so, could pass if it gets to the House floor.

Regards,

Paul

Another one from Brian kelsey,

I view the issue of hand-gun carry laws as very important to Tennesseans. Unfortunately, I am not on the Criminal Practice and Procedure Judiciary Subcommittee, so I do not have a vote on this bill at this time. Currently, there is no action that I can take on the bill before it receives a hearing. Should the bill come before me for a vote on the House floor, I assure you I will consider your views in my deliberation. As I recall, Speaker Naifeh exercised his option to sit in on the subcommittee that was hearing this bill in 2004. During that meeting Speaker Naifieh spoke against the bill, thus killing the bill.

As the bill progresses, please keep in touch, and I will be more than happy to clarify my views for you.

Thanks,

Rep. Brian Kelsey

Not the best news I've heard today:(

Responses I have gotten so far.

First one really does not state a view point or stance on the bill.

I appreciate your message and your position on this legislation. I

realize this is a very important issue to many, and I will be following

the bill as it moves through the committee system in the House. Thank

you very much for your interest.

(The best of luck part was a guess. I'm figuring he'd respond with something like that in hopes of gaining another vote for the next election.)

How do these unresponsive reps end up getting reelected? I guess most people don't pay attention to local/state elections and either vote down party lines or don't vote at all.

I was thinking about running...just to see how I do...I dont think people pay much attention to this level...more focus on the fed level...

I emailed a total of 14 reps...

I got 2 responses, neither from MY rep...both were good though...

"Why would you go somewhere dangerous where you would need a gun?"

Rep. Janis Sontany (D-Nashville) to TFA Member, Scott Frick of Collierville regarding the Restraunt Bill that was killed in committee then. April 7th, 2005.

Have often wished that Mr. Frick had snidely responded "Like Memphis?"

We have our work cut out for us.

Somewhere dangerous, where you would need a gun??? Oh pulease!

How about every time you go out your front door you MIGHT need a gun??? :) Just like you MIGHT need your spare tire. Do these people not watch the news??? Heck, some people don't even have to go out their front door and they're in danger.

Rep. Janis Sontany's statement is so absurd I can't even comment on it, must live in a bubble or something.

You would think the fact this proposed change in the law keeps coming up it might give them a hint that it's needed in this state.

There really needs to be some changes in the state offices.

all anti-gunners are ant-gunners until they are in the need of a pro-gunner...I hope that they will never be a resturaunt that a bg walks into, but if they ever were, you can bet they would want an armed civillian to save their childrens lives...oh, thats right, we cant because they didnt support the bill....

lame...

PERFECT example..http://tngunowners.com/forums/showthread.php?p=56888

I wonder if Hilary has armed security around her....I dont see why she needs them, i mean, i am sure the places she goes are no-gun zones...

I know she has them...question is...are they packing (obvioulsy they are) so why does she need armed people protecting her? I mean, really they are not "protecting" her, they are really putting her life in danger, guns kill people, guns are the problem...and if you say "NO guns" it means No Guns, and everyone will respect that.

I just find it amusing that guns are bad......For everyone ELSE...not when it is their (Hillary's) best interest...

- Term limits for all elected offices.

- Term Limits for internally elected or appointed positions (Speaker, Chairman of sub Comities, ect.)

- If you want to run for another office you must vacate your current office.

- Any person of interest who still gets SS security must pay for said security force from own pocket when not currently in office. After all most of these people are already millionaires a few times over before they make it to higher office.

That just begins to cover my opinion of how our representatives on teh state and federal level should act/be treated/live life.
