Yote load, too light?

Recommended Posts

I had planned on working up a 50 or 55 gr. bullet load for my .222 to use on yotes, but I've got a really accurate 35 gr. bullet load. You think that's too light a bullet for something as big as a yote?

thought I'd update the thread and see if anyone has a favorite powder for .222? I've been using BLC-2 just because I had some, and a little IMR 4198 for the same reason. But I think I may have to test out something else. Maybe RL 7, Varget or a winchester powder. I bought some even lighter slugs, 30 gr. and want to get them a spin.

punched a few more holes this afternoon with the load. I've got it set for 1" high at 100 yds. I think I could get it down to 1/2" groups with a good rest. The scope on it is an old Pecar Berlin 6x with dot retical, so it's not the easiest to group with. I'm using 25gr. of BLC-2. I'll be ready for him next time.

I"ve got a .223 bolt I've had for a long time and never have worked up a good load for it. Maybe I'll do a little work on it now that I've got the bug.

This one belonged to my uncle. He gave it to me over 15 years ago and it's been sitting in the safe ever since. He used it way back when, it was made in 1947 or 48, for ground hogs and crows. I just recently got it out, and have been appreciating ever since. It's a pretty neat feeling to shoot something he used and was very proud of. It's a beautiful old gun. I think of him every time I handle it.

If the light bullets shoot good they'll be good. Another thing about light bullets is the recoil is so light that you can sometimes see the hit on a groundhog, crow , coyote or whatever. I used to shoot my .223 a lot and with 40 gr. Sierra hp's I could see a groundhog fall in the scope. With 55 gr. I couldn't. What brand is the 30 gr. bullets you got?

imr 4198 with a 40 grain or 50 grain is very hard to beat in a .222 if you wanna try deer with a 222 give the barnes 53 grain tsx a try, works great with 20 grains of IMR 4198.

I've got some 4198, but I just haven't been able to make anything work with it. I have a .223 contender and it (at least years ago) was a one holer and I'm pretty sure I used 4198 in it. I"ve had this can for a pretty good while, maybe it's just old and burns inconsistently.
