My WASR 10/63 is interesting

Recommended Posts

Apparently the GP WASR 10/63 model AKM is made pretty well these days, but still mighty plain. Mine is constructed of a WASR 10 receiver reamed out by Century Arms to take the 30 round mag. But most of the other parts date from a 1975 Romanian military AKM. The trunion, bolt, bolt carrier, back of the rear sight, and receiver cover are all stamped with the same serial number. Lots of proof marks are stamped here and there, too. Of course the fire control group is a USA Tapco G2, which is a really nice FCG. I suppose the piston is a USA part, too. I got this from one of our TGO members a week ago, who had put ATI furniture on it. The ATI stock was too long for my short arms, so I painted the wood stock black, and stuck it on. This makes for a very ugly AK, but it works for me. Light and quick to the shoulder. I really like this AK. It came with a couple of Tapco mags, but I've got four old commie mags on order with Copes. I'm wondering if they will exhibit the dreaded WASR wobble. We shall see!

That's the way they're supposed to be! :)

Did you try painting the forestock as well or just decided to stick with the ATI? I haven't handled that specific forestock but it looks like it would work better than the wood.

I have the complete wood set, but I like the ATI foregrip, and decided to just leave it. I could paint the rest of the furniture black (I like the EBR look), but I don't see any reason to replace the ATI synthetic. I like the Romanian forward facing "dongle" foregrip. Might get one and paint it black. But I think it might interfere a little with changing out the magazine.
