I would love to kill a hog. Anybody know if they have made their way to Sumner/Robertson/Davidson county yet? That's a nice one. 338 Win Mag huh? You certainly weren't undergunned.

First of all you can probably forget about being able to hunt any varmints at night in tennessee. The game warden i spoke to hear in Bradley County is absolutely against any type of night hunting he seems to think there will be too many people taking advantage and killing deer, which happens anyway. And also thinks it is too dangerous with all the people around. Guess he thinks we will all just be out there spotlighting and chasing animals with trucks and blazing away at what ever moves, dont know about you but i am much more responsible than that.

Enough politics... yes the stick in the mouth is to show off the tusks...tusks size and weight is the way to judge a trophy in hogs. Although mine was not real huge or have really long tusks this is only the second hog i have killed and the first male. I believe that weight and length is the way to judge a trophy bear. Although i think i would be happy with a 150 lb bear since i have never harvested one. And yes wild hog tastes way better than domestic ones. Dont know how to describe it but it is, maybe someone else can give a better description on the taste.

As for using the 338 Win Mag... I think it is a great all around caliber. The load i am currently using is a 180 grain Nosler Ballistic tip at about 2900 fps MV. This load will put three rounds touching at 100 yards and matches the stadia lines on my burris ballistic plex scope out to 500 yards. That is a starting load for that bullet according to nosler. IN 338 you can go as lite as the 160 barnes ttsx up to a 300 grain berger or sierra. I can also load it down to match a 30-06 or up to match a 375. If i do go after something bigger like elk or moose i can load a bigger bullet. I have killed 2 hogs and a deer with this load and none have gone anywhere. And there was no more meat damage to the deer than anyother 270 or 30-06 or even 300 magnum will do. My rifle is a ruger M77 MII stainless with the ruger zytel skeleton stock. It came with factory sites so i put a burris 3x9x40 ballistic plex scope in warne quick detach rings. I did however Have to put a limbsaver recoil pad on it because the hard rubber factory one put rib marks on my shoulder for a week after firing 20 rounds of winchester ammo just to get the brass.
