WVLT"s website is reporting the guy that shot the elk in GSMNP recieved 150 days jail, loss of his rifle,2 year hunting ban, and 2 year ban from any national park.

Hope it was worth it! Apparently the judge was not amused!

They probably deserved more...who knows what else they poached, prior to getting caught.

X2.

I've never understood why anyone would want to risk so much over poaching a couple of animals. If I were starving and had no other way of feeding my family I would take the risk, but most poachers are far from that and are mainly looking for an easy kill on a trophy animal.

Found this while searching for info on the original incident:

The poacher will face a fine of up to $5,000 and 6 months in jail for the actual poaching and will face losing his truck as well as the weapon he used to commit this crime. It is possible he may face other charges as well for example possession of a loaded weapon inside the National Park which is still illegal until February of 2010.

It's a shame he didn't get the max!
