Blackhawk holster opinion

I gave $15 for a used (like new) Fobus the other day. It fit well, but had something that seemed to dig in my side, like a sharp point or something. I'll be fixing that with some fiberglass resin and will have the holster like it should have been from the factory. Other than that, it works fine.

So I looked at the Blackhawk, thinking I may like it better. It was about $45+tax. It has a release button that's in the position your finger trigger is when drawing, so it's relatively passive compared to many. That is one of the reasons it appeals to me. It also has adjustable cant. I thought that if I could rotate it (unlike the Fobus), I may find a more comfortable position. It also comes with a belt clip and paddle attachment.

The belt clip is pretty decent, and adjusts to different belt sizes, but it leaves the gun out away from my body quite a bit. I tried the paddle, which also is adjustable for different belts, because it hooks under it on the outside. It sticks out from my body a little less, but still too much to conceal easily. The paddle is quite a bit wider, which many may like..but I'm not a very big guy, so it doesn't contour to the side of my hip like it would a guy that's 250lbs. I have a corner that sticks out at front and back.

Overall, I don't find it as comfortable as the Fobus. Even with the ability to adjust the cant, it's not as easy to conceal as the Fobus. This Blackhawk will be going back to the store I bought it, for a refund.

WHat are others' thoughts on the Blackhawk?

Have you looked at the fobus roto holster? It is fully adjustable as far as the cant, and if you like the one you have now you should like the roto model, you might look into it.

The link below is just one I found quickly doing a search for "fobus roto" I have not done any business with them, actually I bought my last couple of holsters off ebay, that was where I found the best price...

I use a Blackhawk SERPA for my XD at the range, and oftentimes to carry as well... I use it in the paddle configuration because I have concluded that it is more secure that way. Fobus holsters are much weaker.

The SERPA offers positive retention and smooth draw. They aren't very concealable without a bulky cover garment, but I usually don't try to conceal mine.

There have been a small number (like 2 or 3) reports of debris jamming the release mechanism... but these, as far as I know, have not been substantiated. There have also been 1 or 2 reports of people negligently pulling the trigger of their weapon (Glock) when drawing (allegedly because their finger was aligned with the trigger guard after pucking the release tab)... but after handling the holster it's pretty obvious that such an incident would require gross incompetence with their weapon.

Buy one with confidence. Every one of these I've seen used worked flawlessly. They certainly aren't high-end holsters, but they are head and shoulders above Fobus.

I just bought one for my G19. I use the belt carry adjusted for crossdraw. To me its more comfortable when driving. I wear an untucked shirt over a t-shirt for winter carry. I'll be buying another for my XD9 service when I save some extra dollars or sell my DM Bullard leather hip holster for the XD. I didn't think I liked plastic holsters till I got this one.:D

I also have a serpa and since I got it I have retired my fobus, I really don't like having to yank my pistol out of a holster anyway.

I was telling Engloid about the fobus roto because if he likes the fobus the roto should be to his liking even better because of the adjustability of the cant.

i dont care for the holster with release buttons on the trigger.it will always be locked, and i dont want to have to think about to much except where to put my bullet.

I've got a Blackhawk Serpa for my XD45, and it works great. With an untucked shirt or jacket, I am able to carry concealed without printing--but then again, I've got wide shoulders and a narrow waist.

I like the retention system. It holds the gun securely, but is very intuitive to operate, adding zero time to my draw.

I do have to say, however, that as durable as it is, I've managed to break it. I fell, and my 275 pounds landed squarely on it. The part that broke was the paddle attachment, which I simply replaced with the belt slide attachment. The part that actually holds the gun was undamaged--which really impressed me because it was empty at the time (I was on a playground in TN--carry off limits).

but all that in mind, what does it have to do with holsters?:D
