I think there are perks with joining the Garand Collectors Assoc. when dealing with the CMP. My uncle is a Garand collector and writes some for the GCA Journal.

Go to the CMP site and see the requirements to be able to get a rifle before you take a trip. It will be a wasted trip if you don't. Unless they have changed things you can go and pick out a rifle but you will not be able to take it home with you. They have to ship it to you.

When I went in November or December I took mine home with me.

If you pick out a rifle you can take it with you, but you have to pay the local sales tax then. Or you can have it shipped to your house which is cheaper than the local tax.

I'm thinking about ordering a Kimber 82 from CMP. What tips and tricks can you guys offer? I'm guessing that Anniston will let me pick out a Kimber like they do the Garands?

Another question, since I didn't know I could go to the CMP Store and pick one out...do they accept cash?

They sure do.

But you can’t just walk in and buy a rifle unless you have met all the requirements. You can submit your paperwork and be approved before you go. Unless you are absolutely sure you qualify; you might want to contact them before you make the trip.

Once you have been approved.. they will assign you a number.. after that, all you have to do is give them that number.. and you will be good to go in the future. I will be at the Camp Perry store on the 12th.. can't wait to get there!

I know far more people that were satisfied with their purchase after hand picking one, rather than taking "luck of the draw" through the mail. I was at the south store mid june and every rack was full of beautiful rifles. Even the rack grades were good. I ever saw a guy walk out with what appeared to be the last 2 complete Remington 40X rifles they had. It was considerably better than the first trip I took down about a year ago.

That first trip I walked out with two awesome Rack grade garands that were Service grade based on the finish, muzzle wear and throat erosion, the stocks weren't as nice as the service grades, but they were much nicer than most of the rack grades I see come through the mail. If there are other shoppers in there, don't be afraid to talk with them, they often can be very helpful. I picked one rifle out, but before I left, a couple regulars pointed out to me that there were a couple rifles I may have overlooked, I was really happy I took there advice and checked them out.
